The EU has signed new trade deals with Japan and Canada – and started negotiations with Australia and New Zealand. What’s more, power-guzzling appliances don’t necessarily work better than economical ones.THE EU BUDGET
The EU’s budget for the seven years to 2020 is €1,083 billion (£790 billion at January exchange rates ). While that’s a lot of money in absolute terms, it amounts to 1% of the EU’s GDP. To put that in context, the UK’s own national budget is 40% of GDP. Still, 1% of GDP is 1% of GDP. And we should never waste money – especiallyat
NON-TARIFF BARRIERS
Vested interests benefit; consumers suffer. Such non-tariff barriers are less visible and more insidious than tariff barriers. So even when tariffs were abolished within the then EEC, a lot of trade got gummed up. There was, therefore, a new drive from the mid-1980s to complete the common market, which was then rechristened the single market. FREE MOVEMENT MEANS WE CAN’T CONTROL OUR BORDERS, RIGHT? Vote Leave, which is vying with a Farage-backed group to be the official Leave campaign, says on its website that free movement of people means the UK has “almost no control over who enters Britain from Europe” and makes it “much harder to fight terrorism”. We control our borders. Despite what Brexiteers say, Britain doesn’tneed to
BREXITERS FORGING ‘DISHONOURABLE BRITAIN’ IN IRELAND Have to say, Britain’s record in Ireland was hardly ‘honorable’ in the first place, so to suggest that Brexiters are now forging a ‘Dishonourable Britain’ in Ireland misses the point. Two years ago, Switzerland exercised its freedom as a non-member of the EU and held a referendum on ‘mass immigration.’. By the slim margin of 50.3%, a majority favoured strict quotas on foreigners. To Brexiteers, this Swiss assertion of sovereignty may seem like an enviable model. FARMERS REAP THE HARVEST OF VOTING BREXIT Farmers reap the harvest of voting Brexit. by Charlie Mitchell | 02.12.2016. In the run-up to June’s European referendum, the National Farmers’ Union (NFU) campaigned for Remain. The Electoral Commission’s referendum spending review, published this week, shows that the NFU spent £73,565.06 on campaigning – enough to registeras an

Margaret Thatcher fought a bitter and ultimately successful battle to even things out when she was prime minister. She secured a rebate on part of our contribution to the budget in 1984.Tony Blair gave away some of this rebate in 2005 in the hope that this would lead to further reform of the CAP. It didn’t. TURKISH OPTION: A SECOND RATE CUSTOMS UNION Turkey has a “customs union” for goods with the EU. It is not bound by the CAP (and it’s agricultural products are outside of the customs union), it doesn’t pay fees and there is no freedom of movement of people between Turkey and the EU.. Unfortunately, there is a catch – or rather, several of them. 8 GOOD THINGS EU HAS DONE SINCE BREXIT VOTE Looking out for the little guy. The EU has been standing up to large multinational companies in a way the UK on its own is unlikely to ever do. It is looking out for UK steelworkers, bringing in anti-dumping measures against unfair Chinese competition and protective measures against Donald Trump’s trade war on steel imports. It has also brought in new rules to tackle aggressive tax avoidance US DEAL DAMNED WHETHER WE’RE IN EU CUSTOMS UNION OR NOT Being in a customs union with the EU is one of the things needed to keep the Irish border as free flowing as it is today. Without it, and without following many EU rules, goods will have to BBC LETS BREXITERS’ SWISS BORDER UNTRUTHS GO UNCHECKED Hardline Tory Brexiters must be called out on their inaccurate claims about the Swiss border. Dominic Raab was once again on the BBC Today programme this week (listen from 1:35) telling Nick Robinson that Switzerland offered a model for a frontier in Northern Ireland that “wouldn’t require infrastructure at the border”.The former Brexit secretary argued that “practice around the world FREE MOVEMENT MEANS WE CAN’T CONTROL OUR BORDERS, RIGHT? One of the main problems with the European Referendum has been the difficulty of reducing what is a very complex political and economic relationship to a level of debate simple enough for ordinary folk to participate in meaningfully without reducing debate to ’tis-tisn’t’ levels. UK HAS NOT LOST EURO VETO “there was very little result in ways of shaping how the EU works.” This is a strong argument for Brexit.
