THE INDUSTRIAL DEVELOPMENT OF KWUN TONG The Industrial Development of Kwun Tong – 1953 to 1964. Hugh Farmer with thanks to IDJ for the report and photos. The following report from 1964 outlines the development of Kwun Tong from 1953 highlighting land reclamation which took place between 1954 and 1957. A total of 140 acres (about 60 hectares) of new land was created along theshoreline.

BISHOP HILL CENTURY-OLD UNDERGROUND RESERVOIR IN SHEK KIP See: Demolition of century-old underground reservoir suspended by Hong Kong authorities after they bow to public calls for it to be preserved SCMP 28th December 2020; Century-old Roman-style underground cistern uncovered on Bishop Hill in Shek Kip Mei SUN HING BUILDING (新興大廈) AND ITS DEVELOPERS Designed by the famous architect Eric Cumine, the 29-story Sun Hing Building at 603-609A Nathan Road in Mongkok was the tallest building in Hong Kong when it opened in 1966. Its developer was Sun Hing Realty (新興實業), which was formed by two locals – radio distributor Wong Sau-fai and rice tycoon Chan Wai-shun and two Singaporean TSANG FOOK PIANO (曾福琴行): A CENTURY OF MUSIC IN HONG KONG A native of Ching-yuan (清遠) in Guangdong province, Tsang Fook was born in 1879 and joined the British-owned Robinson Piano (羅便臣鋼琴) in HKin 1905 where he learned how to tune pianos. THE ABERDEEN RESERVOIRS The Aberdeen Reservoirs (香港仔水塘) are a group of two reservoirs, consisting of the Upper Aberdeen Reservoir (香港仔上水塘) and the Lower Aberdeen Reservoir (香港仔下水塘), above Aberdeen on Hong Kong Island.The Aberdeen Reservoirs were built to augment Pok Fu Lam Reservoir in providing water supply to the west of Hong Kong Island. HONG KONG WATER SUPPLY The proposal for the mainland water supply may have been new to the Government as it had not previously been mentioned, but it may not have been a surprise as the RAF undertook an aerial survey of the area on the 5 th October 1959.
