METEOR ACTIVITY OUTLOOK FOR 5-11 JUNE 2021 These sources of meteoric activity are expected to be active this week.. The tau Herculids (TAH) are an irregular shower not active every year. They are best known for being associated with comet Schwassmann-Wachmann 3 and the strong display seen in 1930. METEOR SHOWER CALENDAR Meteor Shower Calendar. The meteor shower calendar is compiled by Jürgen Rendtel since 2016, this way continuing the 25 year series started by Alastair McBeath. FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS Frequently Asked Questions on Visual Observations Contents: I could hardly distinguish the Aquariids or the Taurids. How to note this on the observing form? Which is the best way to determine a reliable value for the limiting magnitude? About 25 per cent of the skyFIREBALL PROGRAM
Statistics. All the statistics of the International Fireball Program are available online.. Here are some numbers (on January, 1 st 2019) – The program received 157,925 reports from 186 different countries since 2005. These reports have been grouped into 38,713 events.. Here THE DELTA-MENSIDS ACTIVE AGAIN IN 2021 The delta-Mensids active again in 2021. Observers from the Southern Hemisphere have reported activity from the little-known shower known as the delta Mensids DME #130. Unfortunately the radiant for this shower only lies 16 degrees from the south celestial pole, which means these meteors are practically invisible from the Northern Hemisphere. MAJOR SHOWERS OBSERVATIONS Lower radiant elevations mean fewer meteors are observable. The ZHR (zenithal hourly rate) of a shower gives a measure of that shower’s activity, and is the number of shower meteors per hour an observer might count under perfect sky conditions with the radiant in the zenith. Major showers have maximum ZHRs of more than 20. FIREBALLS AND METEORITE FALLS Fireballs and Meteorite Falls. Only a very few fireballs are connected with meteorite falls. A meteorite may survive its atmospheric flight and may perhaps then be found if at least part of the body is decelerated from its entry velocity down to its free-fall terminal velocity of about 100 m/s.
