ABOUT - - IRISH COUNCIL FOR CIVIL LIBERTIES This Council is being formed to promote human rights, protect civil liberties, recover them where they have been removed, and enlarge them where they have been diminished. Mary Robinson, a founding member of the ICCL (later President of Ireland and UN High Commissioner for PROTEST - IRISH COUNCIL FOR CIVIL LIBERTIES Protest, like freedom of expression and activism, is a fundamental part of our democracy.When the right to free assembly is respected, dissenting voices can be heard. A different path can be suggested. Where freedom of assembly and protest are threatened – dissenting voices are silenced. FREEDOM OF EXPRESSION Freedom of Expression. Freedom of expression is the bedrock of any society. When people are free to express themselves, new opinions and ideas can grow and spread. We can criticise leaders and dismantle oppressive structures. When freedom of expression is overtly threatened, there are serious knock-on effects which are not asvisible.

We recommend the repeal of some sections in order to better protect human rights, including the section which dispenses with some safeguards during the covid-19pandemic.

NEW WIDE-RANGING HUMAN RIGHTS REPORT TO UN HITS OUT AT 8 April 2021. A coalition of human rights organisations led by the Irish Council for Civil Liberties (ICCL) has submitted a wide-ranging and critical report to the UN Human Rights Council. The organisations are particularly critical of the lack of human rights protections in ICCL SUBMISSION TO THE MOTHER AND BABY HOMES REDRESS 31 March 2021. ICCL submitted a piece to the Restorative Recognition programme for Mother and Baby Homes survivors. We highlighted the human rights obligationsVICTIMS' RIGHTS
ICCL and the Victims’ Rights Alliance. ICCL continues to work with our partners in the Victims’ Rights Alliance (VRA) to ensure implementation of best practice for victims’ rights in the courts system.
