MINKE WHALE
BEHAVIOUR. Minke whales are generally solitary, although they can sometimes be seen in feeding groups of up to ten animals. They are capable of swimming at speeds of up to 13 mph and their typical dive sequence is five to eight blows at intervals of less than a minute, followed by a dive which usually lasts three to eight minutes.JOIN & SUPPORT

Diet: Fish and krill. PHYSICAL DESCRIPTION. Humpback whales are easy to distinguish from other baleen whales due to their distinctive appearance. The head has a number of knobbly tubercles, which are enlarged hair follicles. The body is predominantly black with white patches on the underside. The fluke can measure up to five metresacross and

STRIPED DOLPHIN
Striped dolphins are streamlined oceanic dolphins, similar in shape and size to common dolphins and measuring up to 2.6 metres in length. They have a long beak, a large curved dorsal fin and short tapered pectoral fins. STRIPED DOLPHIN
Striped dolphins are streamlined oceanic dolphins, similar in shape and size to common dolphins and measuring up to 2.6 metres in length. They have a long beak, a large curved dorsal fin and short tapered pectoral fins. THE CHALLENGE
Our seas are under huge pressure; increasingly busy, noisy and polluted. Scotland’s whales and dolphins exist in a fragile state, threatened by a range of environmental, climatic and man-madestresses.
There have been significant changes in the Scottish west coast marine environment over the last two decades. Our research has identified that the consequences for whales and dolphins are already apparent:20%

Hebridean Whale and Dolphin Trust (HWDT) is a marine conservation charity that takes action through a unique programme of community based research and education. This two pronged approach ignites strong local stewardship and supports meaningful change for the conservation of Hebridean cetaceans and marine life. We are change agents; conducting the research that underpins the future safeguarding of whales, dolphins and porpoises. Training up volunteers to become citizen scientists on our research boat trips as well through our sighting networks. We also provide educational experiences in our dedicated Discovery Centre, on our boat Silurian and by visiting schools around the wholeof the Hebrides.
