Meat, plants & TMAO. Executive Summary * A study has just been published with findings from a crossover trial where 36 participants consumed plant-based 'meat' vs animal meat 2-3 times a day. * The study was funded by the plant-based ‘meat’ company Beyond Meat. * The primary outcome of interest was TMAO (trimethylamine-N-oxide). COCHRANE SATURATED FAT REVIEWS The Cochrane reviews have also focused on systematic review and meta-analysis of randomised controlled trials, and not population studies, which also adds to the value of the publications. REVERSING DIABETES (TYPE 2) Westman et al undertook a randomised controlled dietary trial (first tick) in 84 people with type 2 diabetes (second tick). The primary outcome was the same measure of diabetes remission as The Lancet study – HbA1c and medication reduction/elimination (third tick). The 2008 paper used the word “reversing”, rather than remission.SUGAR IN FRUIT
The medium banana with 14 grams (3.5 teaspoons) of sugar has 27 grams of carbohydrate in total. Even if we generously ignore the 3 grams of fibre, that leaves 10 grams of carbohydrate, which also breaks down into sugar. The sugar in fruit is thus barely different to the sucrose in pizza or prosecco. The body does not know if glucose and CHOLESTEROL & HEART DISEASE Cholesterol is vital for the brain, central nervous system and memory functions (hence how the side effects of statins include memory loss, mental confusion and people generally just not feeling themselves). PLANT BASED DIET PROPAGANDA Executive summary * At a recent conference, Dr David Unwin came across a leaflet published by an organisation called “Plant Based Health professionals UK.” The leaflet summarises the claimed benefits for a Whole Food Plant Based (WFPB) diet. Five a day is not an evidence based nutrition message. In this post I ask the question – is it still a good message – even though it’s not evidence based? I give five reasons as to why it is not a good message: the lost opportunity of making “eat real food” as well known as “five a day”; people having five a day ‘as well as’ not ‘instead of’; making bad choices to get REVERSING DIABETES (TYPE 2) On 5th December 2017, we woke up to the headlines: “A cure for diabetes: Crash diet can REVERSE Type 2 in three months” and “I beat type 2 diabetes with 200-calorie drinks”. The headlines came from a study published in The Lancet entitled “Primary care-led weight management for remission of type 2 diabetes (DiRECT): an open-label, cluster-randomised trial.” (Ref 1) WE HAVE GOT CHOLESTEROL COMPLETELY WRONG Permalink. Hi I have been looking at Dr Kendricks 27 factors and the scottish study that he gave a talk about. One criticism from the Cholesterol supporters is that it deals with all death and at first I thought OK but surely the factors equally apply to CHD and CHD death but looking at the original report at BMJ this does not appear tohold.
