International Health News provides useful, authoritative and timely summaries of the latest research in health, nutrition and medicine. ALTERNATIVE MEDICINE: WHY SO POPULAR? Alternative medicine is becoming increasingly popular. In 1997 Americans made 627 million visits to practitioners of alternative medicine and spent $27 billion of their own money to pay for alternative therapies. In contrast, Americans made only 386 million visits to their family doctor. It is estimated, by none other than theHarvard Medical
MICROVASCULAR COMPLICATIONS OF TYPE 2 DIABETES The complications of diabetes are generally divided into two groups, macrovascular and microvascular. The former include heart disease as manifest mostly by heart attacks and strokes. WATER SOFTENERS AND KIDNEY DISEASE Dr. John Graves, MD at the Mayo Clinic describes a recent case where a 78-year-old man with hypertension and diabetes suffered acute kidney failure and hyperkalemia (abnormally high blood level of potassium) shortly after starting to drink large quantities (3 to 4 liters/day) of water, which had been treated in a potassium-based water softener. ALZHEIMER'S DISEASE: THERE IS HOPE! It is tempting to speculate that vigorous exercise of the brain, particularly in the early years, may be effective in preventing AD. However, recent research has discovered many less speculative measures that anyone concerned about developing AD can easily take: NIACIN TREATS DIGESTIVE PROBLEMS Many digestive problems such as bloating, abdominal distention or pain, heartburn and belching are caused by a lack of stomach acid (hypochlorhydria) which can be traced to a lack of niacin. THYROID HORMONE AND PROSTATE CANCER Researchers at Mount Sinai School of Medicine report that the thyroid hormone, triiodothyronine (T3), may be a useful marker for prostate cancer aggressiveness. DIETARY FAT AND CORONARY HEART DISEASE. IS THERE A CONNECTION? TRANS-FATTY ACIDS. Polyunsaturated fats, as a class, include the so-called trans-fats. Most of the trans-fats encountered in the modern diet are man-made by the partial hydrogenation of polyunsaturated fats using high temperature and a metal catalyst. LOW CHOLESTEROL LEVELS MAY NOT BENEFIT OLDER PEOPLE HONOLULU, HAWAII. There is little doubt that high cholesterol levels are detrimental to people aged 65 years or younger. Whether high cholesterol levels also affect older people negatively is a lot lessclear.
