EASTERN COTTONTAIL
First, let’s get this straight: this is not a pet rabbit.. Eastern Cottontails (Sylvilagus floridanus) are wild rabbits native to New York – not to be confused with Domestic Rabbits (Oryctolagus cuniculus) that have been bred from European varieties for the pet trade.Knowing that has made the difference between life and death for this little bunny, who was brought in with his littermatesGREAT HORNED OWL
The Great Horned Owl is a year-round resident and is the largest owl we have in the New York City area. Ernestine was lying down on the ground in the cemetery and was easily picked up and transported to the Wild Bird Fund in Manhattan. On intake she was quiet but alert. EASTERN GREY SQUIRREL As few as 1 in 10,000 squirrels are black. It is a type of melanism – the opposite of albinism – that produces dark-colored pigments and is found in a variety of animals including wolves, panthers, coral snakes and even moths. At the Wild Bird Fund the squirrel’s blistered pads and cut nose were medicated, and she was put on bedrest
RUDDY DUCK - WILD BIRD FUND That’s pretty tough for a little duck that weighs about as much as a can of Coke. This Ruddy Duck was found in Brooklyn, entangled in a rubber band and unable to walk or stand. The band had cut into his head and beak, and he had puncture-like wounds on his back and flank from where he had escaped from a dog. Great Egrets ( Ardea alba) are summer visitors to New York, and can be seen wading in fresh-water lakes, salt-water marshes, canals and even ditches all around the city.
