The vicuña is prized for its fine fleece and was almost exterminated by hunting, however, after strict conservation, several populations have recovered. Vivek will continue to monitor the ivory trade routes and flow, illegal poaching activities and the overall effect on the Asian elephant population. WHITLEY AWARDS 2021: THE SHORTLIST Every year we recognise six grassroots conservationists with Whitley Awards – prestigious prizes providing funding, training and profile. This year we received 107 applications of an exceptionally high standard, representing diverse approaches across a broad range of countries, habitats and species in the global south. CONSERVING THE PHILIPPINE EAGLE ON MINDANAO ISLAND Conserving the Philippine’s Bird King. £70,000 over 2 years. The Philippine Eagle is Critically Endangered and only 400 breeding pairs remain on four islands. This apex forest predator is the national bird of the Philippines yet shooting, hunting and deforestation continue tothreaten it.
SUSTAINABLE RESOURCE USE IN THE GOBI DESERT, MONGOLIA Sustainable resource use in the Mongolian Gobi Desert. This small, harmless, lizard-eating snake was once widespread throughout Antigua, but became almost extinct early this century, hunted relentlessly by predators such as mongoosesand rats.

MONITORING OF ELEPHANT POACHING AND IVORY TRADE, INDIA AND The pressure to open up the ivory trade even more is expected to continue. Vivek will continue to monitor the ivory trade routes and flow, illegal poaching activities and the overall effect on the Asian elephant population. This is paramount in order to provide the international community with a true picture of the effect of decisionsthey take.

Leadership and teamwork – Whitley Awards are won by individuals backed by an appropriate team/organisation. Individuals working in isolation and team/joint entries are not eligible.
