MIDDLEHAM CASTLE AND GALLOPS The Walk. On any walk from Middleham two aspects will always stand out. The first is the splendid castle which dominates this most attractive of villages. The castle was the stronghold of Richard 111 during the War of the Roses and a northern base RAILWAY CHILDREN WALK Railway Children Walk. September 21, 2017. It is also a quiet valley, longer than most, therefore making it a fascinating place to explore. This walk links a number of pretty villages (Horsehouse, West Scrafton, Carlton and Gammersgill) and in addition has the variety of using tracks on both sides of the valley. BOULSWORTH HILL AND WYCOLLER The contrast between Wycoller and the moors of Boulsworth Hill is stark. The hill (a mountain is over 2,000 feet high, Boulsworth is 1,686ft) lies atop some bleak moorland. The approaches are wet and often muddy but the views are interesting. SALTBURN TO SKINNINGROVE The Walk. For those walking the Cleveland Way, Saltburn by the Sea is a highly satisfactory staging post. The moors and farmland have been completed and the long, lovely coastline of North Yorkshire is ahead. However for the day walker there is a double delight. The cliff side walking to Skinningrove is highly enjoyable for a number of reasons. On the return to Bowness there is some road walking but along a pavement and not for too long. Prior to this is the section along the shores of Windermere. A WALK ROUND RUNSWICK BAY The Walk. I find a walk around Runswick Bay a lovely place to potter. In fact it is probably my favourite section of the Yorkshire Coast.I can justifiably recommend a walk along the sands and rocks to Kettleness with a return via the Cleveland Way (or reverse it and return via the sands). The short stretch of coastline from Robin Hood’s Bay to Whitby has some wonderful views and typical coastal walking. The up and downs are not too bad (except Maw Wyke Hole) and the path generally in good condition. However it is the memorable ruins of Whitby Abbey that become increasingly oppressive as you approach thetown.
A SHORT WALK NEAR ASKRIGG September 20, 2017. Bainbridge is the base for this short walk near Askrigg. It is a summer’s walk, a straightforward stroll in the heart of Wensleydale. Askrigg entering the village. Askrigg Ure at Worton. Askrigg village. Bainbridge looking at the FINSTHWAITE HEIGHTS & HIGH DAM The dam is hidden way amongst the varied dense woodland of birch, larch, oak and Scots Pine. BEACON HILL NEAR DANBY Beacon Hill near Danby. October 8, 2019. Beacon Hill near Danby is an excellent vantage point for the northern moors and over to the sea. At the top of Cauldron Spout is Cow Green Reservoir. The reservoir was built to supply the Teesside industries in the late 1960s. CLIMBING SKIDDAW FROM KESWICK Climbing Skiddaw from Keswick is certainly the most straight forward route up one of the Lake District 3,000 footers. SEMER WATER WALK
Semer Water walk. September 3, 2019. The Semer Water walk is unusual. Not only are lakes very rare in the Dales but this one is both a nature reserve and an outdoor centre. The path along the back of Ullswater is more picturesque but the remoteness of Ennerdale gives the walk an edge not found near the more popular lakes. Ennerdale also has the advantages in that it is an ideal size for a full circuit (7.5 miles) and there is excellent, non eroded, BANNISDALE HORSESHOE Bannisdale Horseshoe. April 28, 2021. The circuit of Scafell Pike and Scafell from Wasdale is a well deserved classic. This is particularly so if you climb Lingmell first and do not take the badly eroded path directly to Scafell Pike.
