1951 view of the Hawthorn Restaurant in Indianapolis, Indiana. This negative, made by the Indianapolis Fire Department on September 3, 1951, probably documents a small fire. The Hawthorn had five theme rooms and had expanded beyond the original brick house at 1611 N. Meridian Street. Today a McDonalds and parking lot takes up the whole 1600 block of Meridian Street.WHATWASTHERE
Cosmopolitan Hotel, located at Eighteenth Avenue and Broadway, was designed by architect William Bowman and was built in 1926. When the Cosmopolitan Hotel opened in the summer of 1926, it annexed the Metropole Hotel next door. Billed as the “most complete” hotel in the city, more than 5,000 people wandered through the “Cosmo’s” common areas on its first day.WHATWASTHERE

This is Oscar's Drive-In (aka The Circus). This was there was before Jack in The Box. In fact, this is the chain that gave Robert O. Peterson to open the first Jack in The Box in 1951 in San Diego. Note the cigarette machine at the far left and a phone booth around the wall at the far right. The banner advertises Double-Deck Hamburgersfor 25¢.

Paul Eakins' legacy lives on through his family who are selling the music he recorded from his famous collection of musical machines. The Gay 90s Village, Inc. was in business since the 1950's and was initially involved in acquiring and displaying Eakins collection of machines at the Million Dollar Museum in Sikeston, Missouri and The Gay 90s Melody Museum located in St. Louis, Missouri.WHATWASTHERE

Opening sequence of "St. Elsewhere", a series is set at fictional St. Eligius, a decaying urban teaching hospital in Boston's South End neighborhood. The actual building, still in existance , is actually the Franklin Square House Apartments, a French Second Empire designed structure built in 1868. Although never used as a hospital, it has been the site of the St. James Hotel (its originalWHATWASTHERE
The Hotel Virginia opened in 1908. It had marble columns, a curved staircase, decorative oriental rugs, and mahogany European furniture. The hotel stood until 1933, the year of the Long Beach earthquake. The hotel foundation can still be seen at Ocean and Chestnut, in Victory Park, which is located along Ocean Blvd (Alamitos to Magnolia) in LongBeach, California.

Built 1923 by Walter W. Ahlschlager?. Demolished 1977. The Graemere was once esteemed as the West Side's premier venue for weddings, banquets, and social celebrations. Its proximity to Garfield Park made it extra desirable. Later ideas to convert the building into public housing never flourished.?*
