The theatre's seats are arranged in curved arcs to ensure each patron benefits from an unobstructed view. Seating Capacity 2,672. Venue Highlights. VANCOUVER CIVIC THEATRES HISTORY Built in conjunction with the Queen Elizabeth Theatre, the Vancouver Playhouse opened in 1962 at a critical point in the development of the performing arts culture in Canada. During this time, vaudeville was declining in favour of cinema as a more popular form of entertainment, and facilities for live theatre and musical groups were scarce. ANNEX - VANCOUVER CIVIC THEATRES Adjacent to the Orpheum, the appropriately named Annex is a spunky, cabaret-style venue equally suited for dance and musical performances as receptions and rehearsals. The space is easily converted from flat-floor to a tiered theatre space with 191 seats and is expertly equipped to accommodate a range of sound and light options. QUEEN ELIZABETH THEATRE One of Canada’s largest proscenium theatres, featuring 2,765 seats and a central location in downtown Vancouver. COVID-19 VENUE UPDATE The Orpheum and Annex theatres are currently open and in Phase 1 of VCT's restart plan. Phase 1 focuses on activations in and around the theatres that are not reliant on audiences. VCT are thrilled to be welcoming back local arts & culture organizations and film productions for rehearsals, live streaming and recording purposes. VCT updates regarding COVID-19 can be viewed HERE.
