FLOODING IN THE RUSSIAN RIVER VALLEY If you live in the rest of the country, this hasn’t been a big story. But, here locally in the Bay Area we’ve had something along the lines of 2 months of consecutive rain. In western Sonoma county, where many wineries line up right next to the Russian River. WWW.UNCORKEDVENTURES.COM www.uncorkedventures.com WINE IN HALF BOTTLES An interesting article over on Mercury News today dealt with how half bottles of wine are likely growing in acceptance, but that the market is being held back for financial reasons. One thing that no one tells you about the wine industry is that scale does a hell of a lot inregard to profit
UNCORKEDVENTURES.COM uncorkedventures.com DECEMBER SHIPMENT DEADLINES, CHRISTMAS TO THE EAST COAST Briefly, information on our December shipment deadlines: Hey guys. Mark Aselstine with Uncorked Ventures. For the last couple days we’ve gotten a couple questions about when is the last day we can order for Christmas delivery. Really briefly, we’re based just outside of the City of San Francisco so if you live on the East ADMIRING MY HANDIWORK This afternoon, winemaker Matt Reid at Benessere and People’s Wine Revolution was kind enough to spend a few minutes with me and put me to work. What you’re seeing below is Old Vine Zinfandel, grown basically across the street in the middle of fermentation. Evidently, it’s pretty soft now, meaning this wasn’t all that much VIENTO RIESLING UNDERWOOD MOUNTAIN VINEYARD 2007 Viento Riesling Underwood Mountain Vineyard 2007 Every once in a while, something interesting comes in-that makes you smile. In this case, an aged Riesling, from a producer that I know.from a vintage that I trust. Before we go on, I’ll mention off the cuff that Wine Spectator scored this at 91 points. It’s an excellent 2 OR 3 BOTTLES OF WINE? WHAT GIVES? I had an email come from a potential customer asking why some of my wine clubs, specially my Special Selections Wine Club and my Reserve Selections Wine Club say that they come with either 2 or 3 bottles of wine. In actuality, of late the Reserve Selections folks have beengetting 4
DRAGONETTE SEVEN 2014 This is a Dragonette Seven from 2014. Quite simply, it’s one of the best Syrah’s produced in the state every year. I originally met the Dragonette guys about 7 years ago (hold on a second, it’s hard for me to even take that one in..it’s been a while!) in San Diego at Family Winemakers. Dragonette AMITY VINEYARDS DRY GEWURZTRAMINER WILLAMETTE VALLEY 2011 We’ve worked with an Amity Vineyards Pinot Noir in the past, but some of it is worth repeating here since we haven’t shipped one of these in our Explorations Wine Club as of yet. Even if you just choose a three-month or even a six-month option, instead of a full year, you will be givingthis person
FAMILY WINEMAKERS SAN FRANCISCO 2016 INITIAL THOUGHTS Every so often, a large scale tasting takes me by surprise. Over the years, I’ve greatly enjoyed Family Winemakers. When I first opened Uncorked Ventures with my brother in law Matt I was still living in San Diego. Back then, Family Winemakers had never been to RUSTRIDGE RACEHORSE RED: CHILES, NAPA VALLEY 2008 As part of our Wine Exploration Wine Club: Rustridge Racehorse Red: Chiles, Napa Valley 2008: Tasting Notes: Full bodied as you’d expect from a Zinfandel and Cabernet blend, especially from a cooler climate region of Napa Valley. UNCORKED VENTURES STARTED ABOUT A DECADE AGO. TIMES CHANGE. IT’S TIME TO CHANGE WITH THEM. I’ve been considering how to keep up with the times so to speak for some time. Covid-19 is an extinction level event for small wineries, exactly the types of wineries I started Uncorked Ventures to help. To really help I’ll have to adapt and change with the times. For the next few months, I’ll be away and figuring out exactly what that looks like. It won’t look like before, because it can’t and itshouldn’t.
My view of the wine industry hasn’t changed. First, yes it’s a hard business. Second, about the nicest and best group of people I’ve ever been around are those who are drawn to it, from winemakers to those that work at wineries. Over the coming months, I’ll be talking to people about how to help and what Uncorked Ventures should look like in order to do so.Wine Club Reviews
