THE MYSTERIOUS LIVES OF APPALACHIAN HERMITS The Mysterious Lives of Appalachian Hermits. Hermit’s hut, ca. 1922. The Appalachian Mountains are rich in hermit history and lore, most of which has been forgotten by scholars and historians. And this isn’t surprising, since hermits, due to their status as self-imposed exiles and social critics, often function as mere footnotes to the THE SPECTRUM OF SUFFERING The Spectrum of Suffering. I n a letter to a friend, an exasperated Franz Kafka wrote, “Almost everyone who writes his sufferings in the very midst of undergoing them.”. For a while, I collected these objectifications as inspiration, gathering journal entries and letters from my favorite authors into neat documents.APOCALYPSE LOGIC

I hear stories of what is out there, not so far away, closer to the sea—miles and miles of rusted, peeling, broken structures strewn across the land, hulking shapes like beached whales, their webbed plastic flesh torn away from their ribbed metal frames.
