HOW TO PLANT SUCCULENTS If you've been wondering how to plant succulents to ensure they grow long and happy lives, this is the post for you! This step-by-step photo tutorial for planting newly purchased succulents will help give you a good foundation for next succulent garden! GASTERIA 'LITTLE WARTY' Full sun to partial shade. Typical water needs for a succulent. Plant grows up to 5″ (13 cm) tall. Plant grows up to 4″ (10 cm) wide. Zone 10a (Minimum 30° F | -1.1° C) Not cold hardy. Propagation by offsets. Can be toxic to humans and animals. Summer Dormant. SEMPERVIVUM 'PACIFIC DEVIL'S FOOD' Quick Look: Full sun. Typical water needs for a succulent. Plant grows up to 3″ (8 cm) tall. Rosettes grow up to 6″ (16 cm) wide. Zone 4a (Minimum -30° F | -34.4° C) Winter hardy. Propagation by offsets. Generally non-toxic to humans and animals. HAWORTHIOPSIS REINWARDTII Haworthiopsis reinwardtii is a small clumping succulent. Its leaves are large at the bottom, then narrowing to a point as it curves upwards. The leaves spiral in a column, and have white bumps on the outside of the leaves. HOW TO MAINTAIN A SUCCULENT WREATH So, to water the wreath you simply soak the whole wreath in water for a few minutes. For the 13” wreath I made this took about 5 minutes. Use room temperature or slightly cold water, but not hot. The frequency of watering will depend on where you live. Basically you’ll water the wreath once the sphagnum dries out. TAKING INDOOR SUCCULENTS OUTSIDE FOR THE SUMMER You may have noticed that succulents growing outdoors often seem to be healthier and prettier than those grown indoors. The two biggest reasons for this are more sunlight (which prevents stretching) and better airflow (allowing the roots to dry out more quickly). I highly recommend taking your indoor succulents outside for the summer, at least for a little while. ECHEVERIA ‘DORIS TAYLOR’ Echeveria ‘Doris Taylor' is not cold hardy, so if you live in a zone that gets colder than 20° F (-6.7° C), it's best to plant this succulent in a container that can be brought indoors. It does well in full to partial sun. Plant in an area of your garden that gets 6 hours of sunlight a day. If WHITE POWDER ON SUCCULENTS If you're using tap water on your succulents, it's likely that overtime you'll notice some mineral build up on your succulents. This seems to happen most with Jade plants and Haworthias. Jade plants will often get white spots in the "pores" or dimples on their leaves. You can simply wipe it off and the plant will continue to grow as normal. OREOCEREUS CELSIANUS "OLD MAN OF THE ANDES" Oreocereus celsianus “Old Man of the Andes” is not cold hardy, so if you live in a zone that gets colder than 10° F (-12.2° C), it's best to plant this succulent in a container that can be brought indoors. It does well in full to partial sun. Plant in an area of your garden that gets 6 hours of sunlight a day. Cresting is a mutation that occurs as the plant grows. Instead of producing more branches or stems, the plant flattens out and creates a wide flat surface. CARING FOR SUCCULENTS IN WINTER Water Outside. Since it can be a hassle to water succulents indoors (bringing them all to the sink, waiting for them to stop dripping, etc.) water them one last time outside. Try watering them 2-3 days before bringing them inside. This allows them to soak up the water they need and start to dry out. Succulents are a group of plants that store water in their leaves. The leaves tend to be thick and fleshy, but some genus and species have thicker leaves than others. Succulents tend to thrive in dry climates and don't like a lot of humidity. Pin. As with any other plant, HOW TO PLANT SUCCULENTS If you've been wondering how to plant succulents to ensure they grow long and happy lives, this is the post for you! This step-by-step photo tutorial for planting newly purchased succulents will help give you a good foundation for next succulent garden! HOW TO WATER SUCCULENT PLANTS How to Water Succulent Plants (indoors and outdoors) The best way to water succulents is with the “soak and dry” method. Soak the soil completely then let the soil dry out completely before watering again. And make sure the succulents are in a well draining soil in a potKALANCHOE HUMILIS
Kalanchoe humilis is not cold hardy, so if you live in a zone that gets colder than 10° F (-12.2° C), it's best to plant this succulent in a container that can be brought indoors. It does well in full to partial sun. Plant in an area of your garden that gets 6 hours ofsunlight a day.
ACANTHOCEREUS TETRAGONUS "FAIRY CASTLE CACTUS Acanthocereus tetragonus “Fairy Castle Cactus” is a wonderful succulent for beginners. It grows slowly and does well indoors. The name Acanthto comes from the Greek word akantha meaning “thorn.”. This is good to remember when handling this cacti, as it has manyspines.
HOW TO PROPAGATE SUCCULENTS FROM LEAVES AND CUTTINGS To take a leaf for propagation, just gently twist the leaf off the stem. Make sure it's a clean pull, leaving nothing on the stem. In fact, it's fine to pull of a little of the stem, too. Every time I've broken off a leaf just before the stem, it's always died–so make sure you get all the way down to the stem. ECHEVERIA 'PERLE VON NURNBERG' General Care for Echeveria ‘Perle von Nurnberg'. ‘Perle von Nurnberg' is a beautiful evergreen gray succulent that turns pink and purple under full sun. It has pink flowers with yellow interiors that bloom in the summer. If there are dead leaves on PVN, it is best to remove them quickly, as they can attract pests. CHOOSING THE RIGHT POT FOR YOUR SUCCULENTS If you're looking for an unusual way to plant your succulents, wood is a really interesting option. I love the driftwood planter I made last summer. It's much more eye-catching than your typical pot or planter. Plus, wood is helpful for succulents that sit in direct sun or hot MYRTILLOCACTUS GEOMETRIZANS FORMA CRISTATA "DINOSAUR BACK Myrtillocactus geometrizans forma cristata “Dinosaur Back Plant” can be propagated from stem cuttings in the summer. Use a sterile, sharp knife or pair of scissors. Remove a stem from the main plant, and allow it to callous for several days before placing on well Succulents and Sunshine* Succulent Types
