VIRTUAL GREAT SAUNTER Back by popular demand, the VIrtual Great Saunter will now be an annual Shorewalkers’ event. From October 1-17, 2021, walk 32 miles in any number of segments or all in one day, as is done for the Great Saunter, circumnavigating the island of Manhattan. HIKE REPORT: 43RD GREAT MANHATTAN BRIDGE REPORT The Williamsburg Bridge is always a pleasure. The suicide-prevention fences mean little chance of a good photo of the view and sure the subways are loud, but the road is smooth and only gradually inclined, with separate paths for cyclists and pedestrians.HOME - SHOREWALKERS

My saunter was in 2 halves. The first half of the walk, on Oct 3rd, I walked from the World Trade Center to the 207th street 14 miles long. On the second half of the walk, Oct. 8th, I took the number 1 Subway train to the 207th. Street subway stop. From there I walked down the Eastside following the Great Saunter route. To celebrate the 55th anniversary of New York City’s Landmark Preservation Law the 15 participants were brought into New York of the past in this 5 mile walk. Three types of sites were visited: 1. FILLING A RIVER GAP AT LAST Filling a River Gap At Last. The city is finally moving to close one of the biggest gaps in the East River Greenway. Officials on Friday are breaking ground on the $100 million project to add pedestrian and bicycle pathways in addition to new park space along the waterfront in midtown, from 53rd to 61st streets.
