FRIENDSHIP AND PICKERING WHARF Salem is not only 15 miles from Boston, but is an ocean-front city allowing for beautiful scenery and great outdoor areas to do schoolwork or meet with friends off campus. At the Salem Wharf you will find many shops, restaurants and The Friendship, a reconstruction of a ship that came to Salem in 1797. This represents just one of the numerous ways in which Salem played a part in the early years of America. Throughout the city, you will see a beautiful blend of history and modern-day. Come and see for yourself what Salem and Salem State University have to offer you. We hope to see you on campus soon!*
BATES COMPLEX
The Bates Complex is one of the residence hall options that you will have as an upperclassman. It features apartment-style housing for groups of six and is divided into single-level apartments, known as flats and two-level townhouses. Bates also contains our international living learning community, where international and domestic students live together to share their cultures, customs and perspectives. The student shuttle bus provides transportation to the other campuses.*
BERRY LIBRARY AND LEARNING COMMONS Built in 2013, the Berry library has been an amazing addition to campus. Not only do we benefit from the new green space in front of the building, but the library also has more than 1,000 study seats, 150 computer workstations, and an extensive collection of books. Within the library is our learning commons, bringing together the Center for Academic Excellence, Academic Advising, TRIO programs, Disabilities Services, the Writing Center, and the Honors Program. The learning commons recognizes the synergy between these academic services and the library.*
SULLIVAN BUILDING
The Sullivan building, home of the original Salem State in 1854, is our oldest building on campus. It houses our education, history, world languages and cultures, and mathematics departments as well as our 90-seat, black-box style, Callan Studio Theatre. Our School of Graduate Studies, located in Sullivan, is the go-to place for current graduate students to learn more about their own, as well as our additional program offerings. These include: master's degrees, graduate certificates, educator licensure programs, and a Certificate of Advanced Graduate Study in Education. For undergraduate students, in addition to Meier Hall, many of your required general education courses will take place in Sullivan.*
MEIER HALL
Meier Hall is home to the art, biology, chemistry, computer science, English, geography and sustainability, geological sciences, philosophy, political science, psychology, and sociology departments. On the fifth floor is our greenhouse, run by the biology program and staffed by Salem State students. The roof is home to the university's Collins Observatory. From September through April, every Monday night, the North Shore Amateur Astronomy Club hosts free public observing hours. The Center for Civic Engagement, the university's nexus for community-based initiatives and civically engaged learning, is also housed within Meier. NORTH CAMPUS COMMONS DINING HALL The North Campus Commons Dining Hall serves breakfast, lunch, and dinner Mondays through Thursdays, and breakfast and lunch on Fridays. For other meals, students visit the Marsh Hall Dining Hall on CentralCampus.
On the first floor, students enjoy a buffet. This is one of the locations where students can use their meal plan, a plan given to resident and commuter students so that they can eat on campus. There are five meal plan options available, each differing on the student's needs as a resident, commuter, first-year, or upperclassman. On the second floor is a food court with a Burger King, sushi bar, burrito bowl station, sandwich shop, salad bar, and grab-and-go meals.*
SOPHIA GORDON CENTER FOR CREATIVE AND PERFORMING ARTS The Sophia Gordon Center for Creative and Performing Arts is home to Salem State's nationally award-winning theatre program and other artistic endeavors. The recently renovated 470-seat theatre features raised seating, an orchestra pit, a full-sized rehearsal stage, and a glass-walled lobby that also serves as an informal social andgathering space.
The theatre program at Salem State is certified from the National Association of Schools of Theatre and holds four major performances in the academic year, often including a musical—most are free to Viking students. Students in our dance program are able to perform, choreograph and attend master classes and performances presented by visiting artists in this inspiring space.*
MARSH HALL
Marsh Hall houses students in double and triple rooms set up in "pods." Each pod consists of 14-16 rooms, plus a lounge area and several bathrooms. There are five floors, each with a kitchenette area, and small lounges throughout the building. BOWDITCH HALL
Bowditch Hall is one of two first year residence halls, with Peabody Hall the other. The halls are identical on the inside, with Bowditch having seven floors, and Peabody, six. The rooms are either doubles, for two people; triples, for three; or quads, for four. The floors can be single-gendered, or co-ed and each contains its own lounge. Resident assistants are on each floor to help you through your first year of college and create great events, like movie nights, or ice cream socials to help everyone meet. Each hall has its own coin-operated laundry and a ground floor lounge, or GFL, with a large t.v. and pool tables.*
ATLANTIC HALL
Atlantic Hall, also located on Central Campus, houses 452 juniors and seniors in 77 six-person furnished apartments. Each fully air-conditioned apartment includes two double rooms, two single rooms, two bathrooms, a kitchen, and a living room area. Each kitchen includes a full-size stove, refrigerator and dishwasher. Small lounges are throughout the building with a large community space on the ground floor, which includes a fitness room, laundry area, pool tables, and television and lounge area. CLASSROOM BUILDING
The Classroom Building houses the Bertolon School of Business, as well as the media and communication and music and dance departments. Here you will find practice and recording rooms as well as our auditorium, where many of our music performances take place. The building also has one of the three open computer labs on-campus, with the others in Meier Hall and the O'Keefe Complex. These are open access computer labs which provide students with convenient access to reliable computing resources. In 2019, the Classroom Building welcomed the addition of the Cabot Wealth Management lab, which is equipped with 12 Bloomberg Terminals.*
STUDENT NAVIGATION CENTER On the second floor of the Classroom Building is the Student Navigation Center. It is a student-centered office designed to be a one-stop solution center to help improve the business of being a student. It includes the student accounts, ClipperCard, financial aid, registrar, and transfer services offices. At Salem State, we focus our financial aid resources on students who have financial need as defined by the federal government's FAFSAcalculations.
Your ClipperCard serves as your university identification card. This is what you will use for your meal plan, dining dollars and ClipperCash. It also serves as an access card to labs, classrooms, offices, residence halls and the commuter parking garage.*
VIKING HALL
Viking Hall, our newest residence hall, opened in August 2015. It will be one of your options for your sophomore, and possibly junior, years. Small study lounges are located throughout the hall, as well as more general lounges for students with televisions. The ground floor cafe, complete with Starbucks, is sure to be a popular gathering place. In addition to the resident assistants in Viking Hall, there are academic mentors. Academic mentors, or AM's, are current upperclassmen who guide and support freshman and sophomore residents, especially during their time transitioning to living at college. They also meet with students to discuss homework and general study tips.*
BOOKSTORE AND ADMISSIONS The university bookstore houses all the gear and books you will need to succeed on campus. It is a great resource for students and families and is the place to find everything you could want to show off yourViking pride!
Next door is the admissions office; one of the first places that you may visit, or interact with, at Salem State. Our undergraduate and graduate admissions counselors are here to answer any questions that you may have throughout the application process. Current students also work in the office giving tours, which leave from here throughout the week. We invite you to visit campus and discover why others have chosen to become Vikings!GET CONNECTED
