HOME - ROAPEABOUT ROAPEBLOGDEBATESARCHIVEREVIEWSACTIVITIES ROAPE - May 26, 2021. ROAPE stands in solidarity with Palestinian people as they struggle for freedom, justice and equality. As a journal that is committed to liberation of colonised people and social justice, and with our historical analysis of apartheid in South Africa and continued levels of post-colonial oppression throughout Africa, we ENTREPRENEURS AND BUSINESS IN RWANDA: THE MODEL PUPIL Based on his new book, David Poole exposes the Rwandan paradox: that despite extensive efforts to support a new entrepreneurial class and the formation of a small and medium enterprise private sector, the Rwandan economic landscape remains dominated by a vast number of informal micro-enterprises. All assumptions, he argues, by the leading development agencies have been proved wrong. INSURGENT DECOLONISATION: NDLOVU-GATSHENI ON THE SINS OF Sabelo Ndlovu-Gatsheni writes how war, violence and extractivism defined the legacy of the empire in Africa, and why recent attempts to explore the ‘ethical’ contributions of colonialism is rewriting history. By Sabelo J Ndlovu-Gatsheni In 2017, a professor at Oxford University in the United Kingdom proposed a research project. WASHINGTON BULLETS
David Seddon reviews Washington Bullets: a History of the CIA, Coups and Assassinations, by Vijay Prashad. This is a book about how political leaders and other activists considered to pose a threat to US and more broadly Western interests have been assassinated, removed in coups and eliminated.. By David Seddon . This short book by Vijay Prashad – who is Executive Director of CLASS, RACE AND WHITENESS Nicola Ginsburgh explores the class experiences of white workers in Southern Rhodesia, based on her recent book (reviewed in ROAPE by Alex Callinicos – see blogpost for full review). She builds on whiteness literature and synthesizes theories of race, class and gender within a Marxist framework. Ginsburgh sees race and class as mutually constitutive and inseparable from the historical COLONIALISM WITHOUT COLONIES: FRANCE, AFRICA AND THE CFA As part of our series on the Tunis workshop, Ndongo Sylla focuses on the CFA franc, one of the most tangible elements of the ‘colonial pact’ in Africa. Under French control the currency continues to circulate in fourteen African countries divided into two monetary zones in West and Central Africa. Despite an announcement in December 2019 of changes to the currency, the most critical THE END OF THE NEW GREEN REVOLUTION IN RWANDA? In a critique of Rwanda’s Green Revolution, An Ansoms argues that the promise of the ‘reconfiguration of the rural landscape’ has failed. Food price inflation rose rapidly while the economies-of-scale of the new system were captured by middlemen and local elites. Yet, the World Bank and the IMF persist in using the so-called Rwandan ‘success story’ to sell neo-liberal policy packages KARL MARX’S DEBT TO PEOPLE OF AFRICAN DESCENT In this blogpost, Biko Agozino argues that Karl Marx was among the few European theorists of his time who did not try to conceal his ‘debt’ to Africa but celebrated such knowledge as foundational. Agozino shows how people of African descent were central to the theory, practice and writings of Marx. Marxism is not a Eurocentricideology.

On the anniversary of Steve Biko’s murder, ROAPE’s Remi Adekoya speaks to South African scholar and activist Mosa Phadi. Phadi reflects on the legacy of Biko’s radical and important thought, but also discusses how he did not consider FANON, MARX AND BLACK LIBERATION Fanon, Marx and Black Liberation. By. ROAPE. -. October 15, 2019. On the sixtieth anniversary of the publication of Frantz Fanon’s 1959 classic, A Dying Colonialism, Ken Olende considers Fanon’s complex relationship to class and Marxism. Fanon wrote during a period of intense anti-colonial struggle where links with Marxist ideas weretaken
GENDER IN THE MINING INDUSTRY In Thandi Dlamini's report on mining in South Africa she writes how more than twenty years after democracy women make up only 11% of the operational mining workforce in South Africa. Before 1994, underground work was exclusively for males. This report assesses the possible side effects of the mining industry’s apparent new found enthusiasm forfemale employees.
EL NIÑO AND MOZAMBIQUE Other research covering southern Africa as a whole goes from 1800 to 1992, and historical evidence for Mozambique shows that there was a strong EL Niño in 1791. From the classification on Mozambique starting in 1850, the two strong ones since 1957 are 1981-82, and 1997-98. The one that occurred in 2015 is definitely comparable tothese two.

Critical Agrarian Studies EGYPT’S INDELIBLE LINK: CORPORATE FOOD, FRONTIERS, AND POPULARREVOLT
ROAPE - July 10, 2018 In important new research on Egypt, Marion Dixon explains that the corporate food system in the country has involved Egyptians across classes buying into the neoliberal project. The space of dietary convergence provided a social consensus that legitimized the neoliberal project, at least temporarily. Yet, its fundamental failure was that the growth of corporate food did little to reduce food costs as a percentage of income for the vast majority of Egyptians.Read more

THE FAILURE OF LEFT MOVEMENTS IN AFRICA Popular protest and class struggle across the continent ROAPE - August 16, 2016 Firoze Manji writes that discontent has been growing across the continent, with spontaneous eruptions and mass uprisings that have in some cases resulted in the overthrow of regimes. In such circumstances, one would have thought that this would have been fertile grounds for the emergence of strong left working class movements across the continent. But why has this not happened?Read more

BETWEEN REPRESSION AND RESISTANCE: EGYPTIAN WORKERS’ STRUGGLESBlog ROAPE
- March 23, 2017
In this blog Mostafa Bassiouny and Anne Alexander assess the current state of the Egyptian workers’ movement and the potential for its revival. The workers’ movement remains, they argue, the most important potential location for effective popular resistance to the neoliberal policy agenda, reflecting organised workers’ capacity to paralyse sections of the economy and the state apparatus itself and the legacy of over a decade’s sustained experience inself-organisation.

DID THE RUSSIAN REVOLUTION MATTER FOR AFRICA? (PART I)Long Read ROAPE
- August 30, 2017
In the first of a two-part blogpost, Matt Swagler considers how the Russian Revolution drew the attention of Black intellectuals and workers from Africa and across the African diaspora. He argues that the revolution cemented the importance of Marxist ideas in debates about colonial and racial liberation for decades to follow. For a time the revolution showed that the struggles to liberate Africa from colonial rule and struggles against capitalism in the imperial countries were integrally linked. The second part of the blogpost will look at the influence of the Soviet Union on African liberation movements after World War II.Read more
