THE MIND OF SKINHEADS: WHAT THE RACIST IS EXPECTED TO LOOK The images in “Inside the Mind of a Skinhead” rely on similar visual shorthands. Gundlock amplifies unsettling content with aesthetic choices. The light in the photos is often poor or sickly. The shots are often a little bit out of focus or off-kilter. THE MIND OF SKINHEADS: WHAT THE RACIST IS EXPECTED TO LOOK The images in “Inside the Mind of a Skinhead” rely on similar visual shorthands. Gundlock amplifies unsettling content with aesthetic choices. The light in the photos is often poor or sickly. The shots are often a little bit out of focus or off-kilter. And the subjects, even when their faces are visible, do not look directly atthe camera.
GUN CONTROL BATTLE: A PICTURE'S WORTH A THOUSAND ROUNDS The saturated color palette and his dorky sweater and bangs recall a 1950s, “Leave It to Beaver” world where everything is wholesome and bright. Surely, only someone unpatriotic could deny this kid’s right to his gun! The syrupy warmth is in stark contrast to the cool dystopia of the Moms Demand Action ad. THE MEANING OF EMMA IN THE VISUAL WAR ON PARKLAND'S As openly bisexual, Latinx, and female, Emma represents the vulnerabilities and interests of multiple groups in the face of a U.S. politics of social justice. But for the same reasons her image is beloved, it is also despised and abused. The vitriol leveled at her is incomparable to other survivors exactly because of her multi-facetedidentity.

THE VISUAL POLITICS OF EMPTY SHELVES Cumaná, Venezuela, 2016. My first response to the photos accompanying the New York Times article “Venezuelans Ransack Stores as Hunger Grips the Nation” was resistance. I knew that Venezuela was in the midst of a major economic crisis and was experiencing serious shortages in basic supplies, but I didn’t trust the pictures or, rather, the way the pictures visualized Venezuela.
