PATIENT-CENTERED WORKFLOW Health IT & QualityPatient-Centered Workflow By Barry P. Chaiken, MD, FHIMSS In the design of successful healthcare information technology implementations, patients matter. Although the importance of addressing the workflow needs of clinicians cannot be overstated, focusing on patient needs helps ensure newly designed workflows leverage the full capabilities of information technology STUDY: BULLYING LINKED TO DECLINE IN PATIENT SAFETY A majority of the events included verbal abuse and intimidating behavior, and other issues reported were work interference and humiliating and threatening behavior. The events occurred in many areas of care, especially in perioperative care, medical/surgical units, and emergency departments, and were often prompted by procedural errors and complications. WHY PANIC BUTTONS ARE MUST-HAVE TECHNOLOGY FOR HEALTHCARE The U.S. Department of Labor Statistics reports that healthcare workers experience nearly as many violent injuries as all other industries combined, despite representing only 9% of the workforce. Several states have passed legislation to help prevent healthcare workplace violence, requiring more robust safety policies. Learn some ways healthcare organizations can be proactive and protect their BARRIERS TO INCIDENT REPORTING IN HEALTHCARE Historically, a culture of blame and shame and a fear of reprisal were seen as the biggest factors preventing staff from reporting incidents. Some healthcare organizations have made strides in moving away from such attitudes by successfully adopting “Just Culture,” “Safety II,” or other initiatives. by HealthLeaders Media, May 28, 2021 Nearly half of COVID-19 patients left the hospital with significant functional decline post-discharge, a new study from Michigan Medicine found. Of those survivors who suffered functional decline, 80% were referred for additional therapy after discharge. Nearly 20% of all patients declined to the point that they were no longer able to liveindependently.
