OFF-SEASON BACKPACKING DESTINATIONS IN COLORADO Wild horses populate this area. Day hiking usage is higher than backpacking usage. Good chance you’ll have the backcountry to yourself. Dominguez Canyon. Located towards the edge the Colorado Plateau, this area offers both quick “out and backs” into the lower canyons and more ambitious 30+ mile trips with trickiernavigation.

For $20, the extensive array of map layers available, the ease of making routes, the ability to import and sync up data points and tracks, and being able to print maps from the web-based software or the app itself has been beyond useful. CRACK IN THE ROCK PUEBLO A chance to hike to the “Crack in the Rock” Pueblo found within the national monument boundaries. Depending on park staffing, a few ranger-led hikes take in this Ancestral Pueblo dwelling not open to the public via self-guided tours. Though I’ve visited Wupatki before, I’ve never explored the typically restricted portion of themonument.
QUICK TIP: BAKING SODA AND VINEGAR FOR STAINS During the cold rinse cycle, add a half cup of white vinegar. That’s it! The clothes will smell better, the oils and salt will be gone, and the clothing will look better. If you want to remove some particularly bad stains, run through the cycle again. Or do a pre-soak of baking soda ahead of time before throwing the clothing to the wash. NEW INSOLES: SIMPLE CHANGE WITH A BIG DIFFERENCE New Insoles: Simple change with a big difference. Replacing the factory insoles with something new is a trick many experienced backpackers know about. But not everyone does. And here are my reasons I think most people will benefit from new inserts. As much as I love spending all my free time outside, even I have to pay the bills. WHERE WATER COMES TOGETHER WITH OTHER WATER There is something almost magical about the confluence of two rivers. Raymond Carver describes it well. where water comes together with other water by Raymond Carver. I love creeks and the music they make. And rills, in glades and meadows, before. they have a chance to become creeks. I may even love them best of all. for their secrecy.GLOVE IN HAND

QUICK TIP: BURNING END OF CORD A simple action that when I mention it, people seem a bit surprised: Burn the end of the cord. Easy-peasy. Mac-n-cheesy. Cut cord with a sharp knife or scissors. You want a clean cut. Apply lighter to end of cord. Melt the end a bit. You may have to gently use your fingers to twist/push together cord to make a seal. Let the end cool off.PACK-CREEK-FIRE

LA-SALS – PMAGS.COM Practical advice and musings on the outdoors, hiking, backpacking, ski touring, and camping. THE COLORADO TRAIL "END TO END" GUIDE Highest official point is 13240 ft. Lowest point is 5520 ft. According to the latest figures, The Colorado Trail averages 10347′ throughout its length! The CDT and The Colorado Trail share the same treadway for 234 miles; over 300 if you take the Collegiate West option. It takes most hikers 4-6 weeks to hike the trail. LOST CREEK WILDERNESS BACKPACK Lost Creek Wilderness Backpack. Many people often ask me what would be a suitable trip for someone coming from lower elevation. A trip that really shows off some of the best parts of Colorado. The Lost Creek Wilderness is my favorite place for early or late season backpacks. There are two lovely loops I always suggest. The first is a 26 mileloop.
