Critically-acclaimed artist Smriti Keshari discusses the inspiration behind the bomb, a multimedia experience co-created with author/Ploughshares Fund board member Eric Schlosser. ABOUT US | PLOUGHSHARES FUND Ploughshares Fund has: Funded American and Soviet scientists who first demonstrated the feasibility of verifying a treaty banning nuclear weapon tests. Stopped the development of controversial and unnecessary nuclear weapons technologies like the 'bunker buster' in the post-9/11 era. Brought together 30 organizations in a campaign to win WORLD NUCLEAR WEAPON STOCKPILE Nine countries in the world possess a total of 13,125 nuclear weapons. The United States and Russia account for 91 percent of them. Since their peak in the mid-1980’s, global arsenals have shrunk by over three-fourths. More countries have given up weapons and programs in the past 30 years than have tried to acquire them.THE NEW ARMS RACE
Nuclear weapons do nothing to protect us from 21st century threats. Yet the US government is planning to spend over $2 trillion during the next 30 years to rebuild its arsenal – plans that could push Russia, China and other countries to build even more nuclear weapons. In short, the world is on the brink of a new nuclear arms race that will only accelerate if current plans stay on track. IRAN NUCLEAR AGREEMENT The Iran nuclear agreement was a major victory for national and global security. Negotiated by the US and other world powers, the agreement stopped an Iranian bomb from being developed without starting a new war in the Middle East. Civil society played a critical role in this historic victory. President Trump has violated the agreement, but thefight isn’t over.
