FIELD TRIP ~ COUNTRY LANE SUCCULENTS, NEW HOLLAND, PA Located at 152 Snyder Drive, New Holland, PA 17557, Country Lane Succulents is an amazing find for any avid gardener. Lancaster County is already known for its many greenhouses and plant growers, but Country Lane has a dizzying amount of succulents all displayed in imaginative ways. The ladies who tend this greenhouse have raised itto an art form.
NO-TILL FLOWERBED PREP! This No-Till Flowerbed Prep method is a winner when you want to make or improve a planting area in your yard. Easy to do anytime of year, fall is perfect as your site will be ready in time for spring planting! The directions are simple, and the only cost is my time. First, weed-whack or mow down all weeds (ivy in our case) as low tothe ground
ROAD TRIP ~ LANCASTER COUNTY GREENHOUSES Greenhouses galore plus row upon row of outside tables filled with seasonal selections for shade and sun and in-between. There’s always something new, whether it’s the latest plant variety or whimsical handcrafted garden accents. After filling a wagon or two, enjoy sipping ice water and some friendly chit-chat while checking out. SALVAGED ~ BUILD A FENCE FROM SHUTTERS! The shutters were salvaged from a friend’s home that had just been painted. They decided to go for a more modern look sans shutters and offered them to me, a win-win! Two different sizes to work with, I had to create a pattern for the fence. So, we put up three of the larger shutters, then a smaller one all the way across. SALVAGED ! THE 32 SHUTTER CHALLENGE ~ REPURPOSING SHUTTERS Barb, wonderful! I know imitation is the sincerest form of flattery but from me you’ll have to settle for envy. Alas , I live in an apartment and my patio is full of my container garden. CHEESECLOTH USES IN THE GARDEN ~ PRACTICAL AND RECYCLABLE Cheesecloth is a traditional row cover for starting plants and protecting them from the elements and insects. It is reusable and, when worn out, compostable! Extend the season in spring and fall by shielding your early and late crops with cheesecloth. Keep the plastics out of the garden and go natural with these light weightfabric row covers.
BURLAP ~ A THRIFTY CONTAINER LINER Coco-fiber replacement liners were twenty dollars or more apiece! So I turned to burlap to get that same great natural look for a fraction of the price! For only twenty dollars, I bought a whole bolt of burlap and relined my hayrack planters and wire hanging baskets. New pre-formed liners would have cost over eighty dollars! SUCCULENT WHEELBARROW PLANTER Placing a few pieces of old screening in its base kept the soil in but still allowed for drainage. First I rolled the wheelbarrow into place, much easier to do before it is filled. Then I filled it with a potting soil and compost mix and was ready to start planting! Using starts and plants left over from other projects, I just popped them into OUR FAIRFIELD HOME & GARDEN Sanctuaries for birds and other wildlife. Our Fairfield Home & Garden is member of "Birdhouse Anonymous," I currently have 68 decorative and functional birdhouses displayed in our garden! (The birds decide which are which!). And, of course, there are also many birdbaths, feeders and plantings specifically designed to make our yard a bird habitat. ABOUT – OUR FAIRFIELD HOME & GARDEN About. Welcome to Our Fairfield Home and Garden! I’m Barb Rosen, newly retired fifth grade teacher, a passionate home gardener, Lab lover and home improvement junkie. Gardening has always been a part of my life from tending the family veggie patch as a kid, nursing windowsill houseplants at college and as a young apartment dweller tofinally

Inspiring Gardens. Wherever we go, I am always on the look out for gardens to see. Many times, we have geared our trips around seeing a garden mentioned in one of the gardening magazines I read. Besides that, living in the Brandywine River Valley, I am fortunate to have lots of opportunities to see famous gardens that people travel theworld
DIY ~ MAILBOX BIRDHOUSE Spray paint the mailbox birdhouse outside in the shade. Lightly coat several times for the best coverage and to avoid paint runs. Let it dry thoroughly before handling. Spay paint the birdhouse. Do this outside or in a well ventilated area! Some stylized flowers and ladybugs painted on in acrylic paint make this little project evenmore fun
DIY PROJECT ~ RAISED BEDS FOR FREE! Rummaging around in the basement, I found half a can of deck paint and gave both raised beds two coats. Finally it was time for the fun stuff: planting seeds and seedlings in my brand-new, free raised beds. One box is done now in cool crops: radishes, MOHONK – OUR FAIRFIELD HOME & GARDEN Mohonk Mountain House is about an hour and a half drive from New York City, tucked into the Shawangunk Mountains, just above the little town of New Paltz, New York. It is a National Historic Landmark Hotel established in 1869 by Albert and Alfred Smiley and DIY ~ BEAUTIFY A CHAIN LINK FENCE WITH BAMBOO! Adjust accordingly for your fence project : Bamboo screening/roll fencing (we bought 5 rolls of 13 ft by 5 ft split bamboo screening), 2 rolls of 18 gauge plastic coated steel wire and a pair of wire snips. Cut the wire into 6 inch pieces and stow in a bucket. Fencing for this project cost $186.95. DIY PROJECT ~ A SIMPLE BRANCH ARBOR Pre-drill guide holes and attach to your fence with wood screws. Fast, easy and inexpensive – my idea of the perfect garden project! In the pictures below you will see the arbor in its first summer sporting morning glory vines. This summer, I planted moonflower vine and purple hyacinth vines (in large flower pots at the base of the arbor) and PAINTING A ROBIN ~ STEP-BY-STEP Apply a light wash of color on the head and start feathering! Mix a puddle of color for the wings and tail feathers. Apply this with a #6 brush (or slightly larger). This is the tricky part: Do not use a real wet wash of color or the old paper will ripple up. Believe me, I didit a few times!
SALVAGED ~ BUILD A POTTING BENCH FROM SHUTTERS! Look below for the easy pictured directions! Two shutters for the table top and two shutters for the legs. Just screw them together where they meet! Two shutters were cut in half to serve as the potting bench legs. Attach the potting bench to the shed with screws for extra stability! A little painting and the potting bench is ready for use! DIY PROJECT : BUILD YOUR OWN TIPSY POTS PLANTER Step #1 ~ Gather materials for planting the tipsy-pots: four small and one large clay pot, 2 bricks, a finial , a 4 foot or longer piece of rebar, potting mix with water retention beads added and a selection of fall plants (mums, pansies, curry plant, plectranthus) Step # 2 ~ insert rebar into pot & down through drain hole into the ground for BLUE HYDRANGEAS ~ HOW TO GET AND KEEP THOSE BLUE BLOOMS Sprinkle a light circle of Aluminum Sulfate around your hydrangea, as shown. After sprinkling the powder around your hydrangeas, water well and mulch. Adding pine needles, shredded leaves or pine mulch will also help acidify the soil over time. And, when you are planting a blue Hydrangea, work peat moss right into the hole to get it off to a OUR FAIRFIELD HOME & GARDEN Sanctuaries for birds and other wildlife.
