OSCE and adelphi conclude first regional consultation on climate change and security in South-Eastern Europe OSCE Secretary General Schmid: We now have compelling evidence that climate change can influence or exacerbate factors that may lead to instability and tensions. As with any global challenge, tackling the potential consequences requires cross-sectoral and transborder dialogue and co-operation. Women’s economic empowerment focus of OSCE discussion, participants call for equality in income distribution, access to health, education, jobs
Gender equality must be central to all decision-making and resourceallocation.
Chairperson-in-Office Ann Linde presents Sweden’s 2021 priorities to Permanent Council Sweden is convinced that multilateral co-operation is the best way to address our common challenges. Sweden has shown that we are ready to shoulder our responsibility for the multilateral system. OSCE launches breakthrough study on gender and human trafficking The research is a first-of-its-kind, taking a comprehensive and holistic approach. It is based on findings of a multi-method research design, which included surveys, interviews, and expert group meetings with survivors, practitioners, service providers, and law enforcement. Montenegro’s democratic development vital to security and stability, says OSCE Chair Linde Linde: Overall progress has been achieved in fulfilling strategic reforms in Montenegro and, moving forward, this must remain the focus while continuing to ensure open and constructive political dialogue among actors, including in the parliament and state institutions. OSCE Chairperson-in-Office Linde concludes visit to Serbia, reiterates strong partnership with the country Linde: The OSCE is a key platform for dialogue on comprehensive security matters based on shared commitments and principles. All participating States have equal footing and Serbia is an active participating State of the OSCE. OSCE and adelphi report: climate change and security offer opportunities for co-operation in South-Eastern Europe Secretary General Schmid: Climate change is one of the most crucial issues of our time in the political, economic, social and environmental spheres. It can also emerge as a security issue when it interacts with other pressures such as unequal economic development, social inequality, and resource constraints. Good governance and the rule of law fundamental to economic growth, say participants at OSCE Asian Partners meeting Ambassador Akira Mizutani, Ambassador of Japan to Austria: As we witness various challenges, including the pandemic, it becomes crucial for OSCE participating States and the Asian Partners for Co-operation to further strengthen the partnership. Pandemic demands co-ordinated recovery, say participants at OSCE Mediterranean Partnership discussion OSCE Secretary General Schmid: The post-COVID recovery should be synonymous with solidarity. Each of our countries will chart their individual strategies. But if we do not co-ordinate our responses, we will not defeat the virus, and we will not prevent similar crises inthe future.
We need concrete action on Women, Peace and Security Agenda, say participants of joint OSCE Forum for Security Co-operation–PermanentCouncil meeting
Progress has been made since the adoption of United Nations Security Council Resolution (UNSCR) 1325 on Women, Peace and Security more than 20 years ago, but more concrete actions are needed. OSCE Representative Richey commends Spain for commitments and efforts in combating human trafficking and recommends new measures to curbdemand
Special Representative Valiant Richey: A great example of how a country can mobilize when the issue of trafficking is elevated to apolitical priority.
