Due to overwhelming demand, Gaia is returning for a full month in pride of place in the magnificent Painted Hall, along with an exciting series of extended opening hours on Fridays. VISIT THE PAINTED HALL The beautiful Painted Hall is the highlight of any visit to the Old Royal Naval College. Painted in the early 18th century by Sir James Thornhill, the hall features 40,000 square feet of walls and ceilings. Meet at the Visitor Centre to join a 45 minute tour of our spectacular grounds. The tour leaves at 11am, 12 noon, 1pm, 2pm and 3pm. There is a 30 minute talk about the Painted Hall running regularly between 11am and4pm.

PAINTED HALL
From 1937 to 1997 the Painted Hall functioned as a dining space for trainee officers of the Royal Navy. From 1498–1694, the site was home to Greenwich Palace, birthplace of Henry VIII and his daughters. 1873 the Naval College in Portsmouth acquired the buildings of the old Royal Hospital for Seamen and the Royal Naval College was born. AWE-INSPIRING GAIA RETURNS TO THE PAINTED HALL Following a sold-out installation in summer 2020, the jaw-dropping Gaia is returning to the Old Royal Naval College this summer. Due to popular demand, Gaia will be displayed in the magnificent Painted Hall for a month, including late night openings. CHAPEL OF ST PETER AND ST PAUL The Royal Hospital Chapel. The Royal Hospital Chapel was built by English architect Thomas Ripley (1682-1758) following designs by Sir Christopher Wren, for the use of the staff and pensioners of the Royal Hospital. The naval veterans were expected to attend the Chapel every day. Daily Talks and Tours. We run daily tours and talks which are free to Painted Hall ticket holders. Book your ticket today! Meet at the Visitor Centre to join a 45 minute tour of our spectacular grounds. The tour leaves at 11am, 12 noon, 1pm, 2pm and 3pm. There is a 30 minute talk about the Painted Hall running regularly between 11am and4pm.

The Navy's state-of-the-art training college (1873-1997) 1873 the Naval College in Portsmouth acquired the buildings of the old Royal Hospital for Seamen and the Royal Naval College was born. It became the most highly rated naval training college in Europe, with a reputation for academic rigour.
