LAVA RIVER CAVE
Lava River Cave offers self-guided exploration of a mile-long lava tube. It takes approximately 1.5 hours to tour the entire cave. PORTLAND'S OLD TOWN
Portland's first real schoolhouse was built here in 1858. But the school came down in 1883 to make way for the Portland Hotel, a seven-story Queen Anne chateau that fell in 1950 to make way for a parking lot. In the 1970s, 64,000 citizens donated money to create the present public plaza. Their names remain engraved on the square'spaving bricks.
FALLS OF THE NORTH UMPQUA RIVER Directions: At mile post 58.6 on Highway 138, turn on to Road 34. Cross the first bridge and turn left to the trailhead parking. These falls are up Steamboat Creek, a very important steelhead-spawning tributary on the North Umpqua River. Steamboat Falls, located at Steamboat Campground, is a 25-foot block-type fall.
