The Open Streets Project is an advocacy project and collaboration between two organizations, 8 80 Cities and Streets Plans, who have extensive experience advocating, organizing, advising, and running Open Streets programs across North America and around the world. FUNDING YOUR PROGRAM To achieve a best practice model of Open Streets it is very important to get your local government to the table. There are many programs in North America that have no government funding and little support, and while this may work in the short-term it is not sustainable and will limit your potential of delivering the healthiest program for your community in the longer term. EVALUATION - OPEN STREETS PROJECT Evaluation has been lacking in many initiatives, making comparisons and lessons learned difficult to establish. Drs. Hipp and Eyler, funded by Active Living Research, evaluated eight Open Streets in the St. Louis, MO, region and have developed a toolkit for measuring the success of Open Streets initiatives. LOGISTICS - OPEN STREETS PROJECT Position Description: Circulate through a portion (1-2 miles/2-3km) of route for duration of an Open Streets day. Encourage people to move into the roadway and off of the sidewalks when the program begins. Routinely check on Ambassadors and Intersection Monitors and offer biology breaks. MARKETING - OPEN STREETS PROJECT Open Streets is about the street. It’s about experiencing the street from a new vantage point, showing people that they can get around the city by foot or bike. As Open Streets are on the street, they are also very accessible to people with mobility devises and challenges because the surface is flat and smooth. EVALUATION - OPEN STREETS PROJECT Evaluation has been lacking in many initiatives, making comparisons and lessons learned difficult to establish. Drs. Hipp and Eyler, funded by Active Living Research, evaluated eight Open Streets in the St. Louis, MO, region and have developed a toolkit for measuring the success of Open Streets initiatives. LOGISTICS - OPEN STREETS PROJECT Position Description: Circulate through a portion (1-2 miles/2-3km) of route for duration of an Open Streets day. Encourage people to move into the roadway and off of the sidewalks when the program begins. Routinely check on Ambassadors and Intersection Monitors and offer biology breaks.
