There are some shelters that claim a 90% live release rate is No Kill. In reality, achieving a 90% rate is the start of shelter reform and modernization, not the realization of it. We Can Do It! Adopting Our Way Out of Killing. “You can’t adopt your way out of killing.”. It is one of the most enduring dogmas in the animal shelter field. But it could not be more wrong. COMMUNITY DOGS
Sterilization of community dogs, in lieu of killing, is being done successfully by rescue groups in U.S. cities, on reservations, in U.S. territories like American Samoa, the Bahamas, and Puerto Rico, throughout Europe, and in other countries. Learn the hows and whys of community dog sterilization - the next frontier of the No Killmovement.
BEHAVIOR DOGS
In fact, based on four recent studies, the pioneering work of behaviorists, and the results of some of the most successful and progressive shelters in the country, a live release rate of even 99% for dogs is not high enough. Thankfully, the path to ending their killing altogether is now clear. Behavior DOGS.COMMUNITY CATS
Reduced intakes and killing of community cats. Reduced complaint calls to animal control. Reduced illness in the shelter. Reduced spending (and waste of taxpayer money). Increased opportunities to expand lifesaving of other animals, such as dogs, too. Saving lives, saving money, and meeting public expectations for humane animal services.NO KILL EQUATION
No Kill starts as an act of will. Animals enter shelters for a variety of reasons and with a variety of needs, but for over 100 years, the “solution” has been the same: adopt a few and kill the rest. -------------------------DEFINING NO KILL
There are some shelters that claim a 90% live release rate is No Kill. In reality, achieving a 90% rate is the _start_ of shelter reform and modernization, not the realization of it. While we should celebrate the increasing success of cities with a 90% or better live release rate, the goal of the No Kill movement is not to reduce killing to some consensus-based level, such as 10%. It is to end killing for all animals who are not irremediably suffering, rigorously defined.
Otherwise, the movement legitimizes the killing of animals who can and should be saved while betraying the very ethos at the heart of theterm “No Kill.”

------------------------- THE NO KILL EQUATION Today, millions of Americans live in cities and towns that have dramatically reduced and even eliminated the killing of healthy and treatable animals in their shelters. Some of these communities are large, some are small. Some are urban; some are rural. Some are rich; others poor. Such communities can be found across the nation, in blue states and in the reddest parts of the reddest states. They are as diverse as America itself, and share only one thing in common: they all achieved success the exact same way — the No Kill Equation.
Our No Kill 101 video explains why the readily-available, cost-effective programs and services of the No Kill Equation hold the key to creating not just No Kill communities, but a No Kill nation. -------------------------BY THE NUMBERS
* About 5.5 million animals enter shelters every year. * Approximately one million animals are killed. * Roughly 30 million acquire a new companion animal every year.
* Less than 1% of shelter animals are irremediably suffering. * Over two million people live in communities saving between 98% and 99% of dogs and cats in their shelters (over two million saving atleast 98% of dogs).
* Over 20 million people live in communities saving between 90% and 99% of dogs and cats in their shelters. * Over 60 million people live in communities saving at least 80% of dogs and cats in their shelters.Statistics
