Quakers, as they were dubbed by their detractors, were the most influential of Newport’s numerous early congregations. This restoration project was funded by grants from the van Beuren Charitable Foundation, the Rhode Island Historical Preservation & Heritage Commission, and the Seventh Day NEWPORT HISTORICAL SOCIETY HOME The World in Motion, Fashion and Modernity 1885-1945. The Newport Historical Society is pleased to partner with the Audrain Automobile Museum to offer a joint exhibit focusing on the evolution of fashion from the height of the Gilded Age to the beginning of the modern era. The exhibit will be featured at the Newport Historical Society at 82 NEWPORT HISTORICAL SOCIETY TOURS Newport History Tours offers socially distant walking tours on a weekly basis. These 60 minute tours explore Newport's Old Quarter with a small group led by an expert guide. All participants are required to wear a face mask and follow social distancing guidelines. NHS has closed the Museum of Newport History and postponed appointments with researchers and scholars for a future date. NEWPORT HISTORICAL SOCIETY HISTORY BYTES: THE ROCHAMBEAU During the Comte de Rochambeau’s visit to Providence in 1780, he was the guest of Deputy Governor and Mrs. Jabez Bowen. As a token of appreciation, Rochambeau gave them a sterling silver stuffing spoon, engraved with the Rochambeau coat of arms. The spoon was later donated to the Newport Historical Society and is one of NEWPORT HISTORICAL SOCIETY NEWPORT SEEN A Digital Archive. In October 2018, the Newport Historical Society acquired the digital archive of Newport Seen, an online magazine founded in 2009 to document the social activities and events of Newport’s nonprofit and philanthropic community. NEWPORT HISTORICAL SOCIETY CURRENT EXHIBITION The exhibit focuses on the lives of the women in a changing world, as expressed through their choices for shopping and fashion. It also brings to light less obvious stories: American consumerism during the first world war, and the evolution of the industry as women began to enter the workforce and embrace social independence, including the mobility that driving provided. NEWPORT HISTORICAL SOCIETY HISTORY BYTES: THE ROCHAMBEAU During the Comte de Rochambeau’s visit to Providence in 1780, he was the guest of Deputy Governor and Mrs. Jabez Bowen. As a token of appreciation, Rochambeau gave them a sterling silver stuffing spoon, engraved with the Rochambeau coat of arms.
