OCCUPATION AND CONFLICT: A REVIEW OF “SCENES FROM 73 Making its streaming premiere May 19 in an overlap with the two-week outbreak of violence in Gaza, Medina Theater Collective’s inaugural production about daily life in Palestine is tragically timely. And yet, as the title illustrates, the ongoing Arab-Israeli conflict has now spanned an entire human lifetime—so perhaps timely is not the best word for Hannah Khalil’s smart, tender, at MULTIPLAYER MODE: THE MAP OF NOW GAMIFIES THE VIRTUAL The result is a multidisciplinary lineup that is still to be finalized. Combining the works of the Links Hall residents and fellows to create a celebration of new work was something they’d been pondering before live performance came toa halt last spring.
ONE RECOMMENDATION: SPECTRUM DANCE THEATER In 2017, Donald Byrd, the Tony-nominated and Bessie-winning choreographer, theater artist and artistic director of Seattle-based Spectrum Dance Theater created “SHOT,” an hourlong dance performance about the murder of unarmed Black people at the hands ofpolice.
ALWAYS LOOK: A PREVIEW OF BEYOND THE BOX 4.3—BLACK HAIR E Yoshinojo Fujima (aka Rika Lin)’s approach to Japanese dance, which respects tradition with the curious eye of a twenty-first century artist, is reflected in the expansive title of her virtual performance at Links Hall, streaming May 15 and 16.. “Black Hair” is the literal translation of “Kurokami,” a popular scene from a classicKabuki play.
PAINFUL WITH PURPOSE: A REVIEW OF WHO’S AFRAID OF VIRGINIA A difficult play to watch but Pulse Theatre’s skillfully acted, full-throttle production is painful with a purpose, capturing the work’s formidable darkness, complexity and ambiguity. POETRY AND THE DANCE: A CONVERSATION WITH PAUL SANASARDO By Sharon Hoyer In his inviting apartment overlooking Lincoln Park, I had the pleasure—and not a rare one, judging from his warmth and affability—of talking at length with choreographer and dance legend Paul Sanasardo. Despite his intention to retire almost two decades ago, Sanasardo’s new piece, “Sleepless Nights in the City” playsthis weekend at
FRIENDS IN NEED, INDEED: A REVIEW OF OUT OF LOVE AT The male presence in Elinor Cook’s “Out of Love” has no name. Peter Gertas portrays all the men in the story of Grace and Lorna, the two friends at the center of Cook’s play. NO, NO, NO, JOSEPH: A REVIEW OF JOSEPH AND THE AMAZING Alas, my evening was destined to be full of squirmy discomfort while I sat soberly watching the theatrical manifestation of my personal hell. In Drury Lane’s “Joseph” an average white bro goes to Vegas, checks into a hotel and has a trippy dream featuring a narrator with remarkable imitation skills (she performs as Britney Spears, Cher and Celine Dion) as well as a veritable army of STAGE TOP 5: JUNE 2021 2 Zafiro Flamenco (North Shore Center for the Performing Arts and streaming live) Ensemble Español Spanish Dance Theatre celebrates their forty-fifth anniversary with an outdoor concert featuring works choreographed by Wendy Clinard and Grammy-winning Nino de los Reyes, and music by guitarist Paco Fonta and dancer-percussionist-guitaristJosé Mareno.
