Butterfly Ball 2021. On May 7, 2021, we welcomed guests from all over the country to the virtual Butterfly Ball and raised $1.6 million to support our science education and conservation work. MEET OUR BUTTON QUAIL! Males & females. Like many other birds, button quail are sexually dimorphic. This means that the males and females look very different. Generally, the females are light to medium brown and males are predominantly blue with black, white, and rust-brown accents. This photo shows a female and male side-by-side. INVASIVE BIRDS IN CHICAGO? The two most concerning invasive birds in Illinois are house sparrows and European starlings. Both are aggressive and can harm local bird populations by stealing food, nesting spaces, and compete for other resources. Starlings are also a big problem for people as well as they can cause expensive damage to farm crops. WHY DO BIRDS FLY IN FORMATION? Birds and jets are both able to gain extra lift by flying in the updraft that is created by the flyer in front of it. Not all migrating birds fly in a v-shape: varieties of hummingbirds, finches, and sparrows all migrate, but these birds are too small to gain an energy-saving benefit from flying in formation. WHY DON'T I EVER SEE BABY SQUIRRELS? Why Don’t I Ever See Baby Squirrels? The simple answer is, baby squirrels don’t leave the nest until they are fully furred and can survive on their own so, without seeing the mother right next to the babies, they all look about the same size. Natural areas along this route such as Chicago’s Lakefront, green spaces, and regional forest preserves, provide important rest stops for birds along their journey. TAKING ANIMAL SELF PORTRAITS WITH TAPPAN GREGORY Like his brother he developed his own mammal skin collection which he donated to the Chicago Academy of Sciences in 1961 upon his death. Known as a child prodigy, Dr. Margaret S. Collins is remembered as a scientist and civil rights advocate. A voracious reader and endlessly curious, Collins entered West Virginia State College at 14 years of age. HOW DO CLOUDS FLOAT? Water droplets in air behave the same way as dust 6. The second reason that clouds can float in the air is that there is a constant flow of warm air rising to meet the cloud: the warm air pushes up on the cloud and keeps it afloat. Donation requests must be submitted online. Phone, letter, and fax requests are not accepted. Requests must be submitted at least 12 weeks in advance of your event. Organizations must be a non-profit 501 (c) (3) entity. Organizations must attach a federal 501 (c) (3) non-profit organization letter to be considered. WOOD FROG - PEGGY NOTEBAERT NATURE MUSEUM Listed as a Species in Greatest Need of Conservation in the Illinois Wildlife Action Plan, the wood frog is a species that Chicago Academy of Sciences / Peggy Notebaert Nature Museum’s biologists are working to monitor and restore to the woodland ponds of Illinois. The regal fritillary is currently listed as threatened in Illinois, with reduced numbers. Today, the fritillary is found in less than 5% of its historic range within the Chicago Wilderness Region, as prairie removal has decimated its habitat.
