In 1889, aged 19 yrs, Alice entered the Civil Service and was later appointed to the Accountant General’s office in GPO London. VINTAGE: SCOTLAND DURING THE EDWARDIAN ERA (1900S The Edwardian era was a time of unprecedented social and political revolution in Britain. By the start of the new century, the country had reached a level of such general prosperity that, for the first time, working men and women were in a position to both argue and agitate for a share of the wealth. In Scotland, at the centre of the incredible manufacturing clamour of industrial Glasgow, a REDISCOVERING AN AMERICAN COMMUNITY OF COLOR: THE Itinerant photographer William Bullard left behind a trove of over 5,400 glass negatives at the time of his death in 1918. Among these negatives are over 230 portraits of African Americans and Native Americans mostly from the Beaver Brook community in Worcester, Massachusetts. Rediscovering an American Community of Color features eighty of these unprinted and heretofore unpublished BIOGRAPHY: PICTORIAL PHOTOGRAPHER LEONARD MISONNE Leonard Misonne (1870 – 1943) was a Belgian photographer. The natural light is projected over the skin in a sublime way adding elements like figures, textures & shapes. The models are summited in a world of distorted light and shadows. Vintage: Mugshots of Prisoners (1900s) LEE FRIEDLANDER: MARIA Deborah Bell Photographs is honored to present MARIA, an exhibition of photographs by Lee Friedlander featuring his wife, Maria. Dating from 1958 to 2008, the pictures were taken during Maria and Lee’s early marriage, and throughout their family life as parents and grandparents. The 32 prints in the exhibition were selected by Friedlander for this venue, thus offering a special opportunity VINTAGE: EVERYDAY LIFE OF EGYPT (LATE 19TH CENTURY Egypt under the Muhammad Ali dynasty remained nominally an Ottoman province. It was granted the status of an autonomous vassal state or Khedivate in 1867, a status which was to remain in place until 1914. The Suez Canal, built in partnership with the French, was completed in 1869. Its construction led to enormous debt to European banks, and caused popular discontent because of the VINTAGE: EVERYDAY LIFE IN NORWAY (19TH CENTURY Life in Norway (especially economic life) was “dominated by the aristocracy of professional men who filled most of the important posts in the central government”.
