COY MOUNTAIN TRAIL
Tucked away on the east side of Alden, oblivious to most visitors who are mesmerized by Torch Lake to the west of town, is a small mountain with a short but interesting trail system. Coy Mountain Natural Area dates back to 1885 when Reuben Coy decided to preserve a ridge forested in virgin hardwoods that towered behind his gristmill. It was the last remnant of the giant maples and beeches in aPRETTYLAKECOMPLEX
Located in Lake Superior State Forest, 27 miles northwest of Newberry in Luce County, Pretty Lake Complex is a designated High Conservation Value Area that stretches across 2,200 acres including the North Branch of the Two Hearted River. The centerpiece of this non-motorized tract is nine lakes connected by a system of trails and short portages PORCUPINE MOUNTAINS: BIG CARP RIVER TRAIL This well-worn trail is a 9.6-mile hike from the mountains to the sea. It begins at the most popular spot in the park, the Lake of the Clouds overlook, and ends at one of the most remote, the mouth of the Big Carp River. In between there are thundering waterfalls, stands of virgin pine, a steep-sided gorge, black bears, bald eagles and brooktrout.
BIG BEAR LAKE PATHWAY Big Bear Lake Pathway is a 2.5-mile trail system of two interconnected loops with most of the trail north of the Bear Lake Road. Departing from east end of main campground is the 1.8-mile Eagle Roost Loop, from the west end the 1-mile Beaver Lodge Loop. WARNER CREEK PATHWAY Located 15 miles west of Gaylord, Warner Creek is a lightly used ski trail in the winter that offers scenery and solitude. It winds through Hardwood Hills, a rugged slice of the Mackinaw State Forest. But most of the pathway is a surprisingly level and easy ski, as if whoever laid it out knew you just wanted to shuffle along and enjoy the winterwoods.
