The James Library building has been the home to the Museum of Early Trades & Crafts (METC) since 1970. Built in 1899 by philanthropist D. (Daniel) Willis James, It served as Madison’s first public library from 1900 to 1967. Mr. James was born into a wealthy family in Liverpool, England in 1832. We will ORPHAN TO APPRENTICE: CHILD INDENTURES AS SOCIAL WELFARE Orphan to Apprentice: Child Indentures as Social Welfare focused on the lives of orphans in early America. The American colonies, and later states, did not have the complex social welfare system that we have today. However, there were systems in place to help those in need, and orphans were among those assisted by those systems. This core collection has been supplemented over the years, and now consists of over 8,900 objects that include tools, textiles, pottery, and archivalSCHOOLS & EDUCATORS

COVID-19 POLICIES
COVID-19 is an extremely contagious and potentially deadly disease that is believed to be spread mainly from person-to-person contact. METC is working with you, its visitors, to employ preventative measures to reduce the spread of COVID-19. Despite these measures, the risk of contracting COVID-19 could increase by visiting METC.CURRENT EXHIBIT
Primary source documents and historic objects will highlight how physicians used to diagnose and treat patients. Throughout this exhibit, testimonies from the Share Your Story project will be featured alongside historic sources. This exhibit intends to reveal the impact disease had upon daily life, but more importantly howresilient Americans

This is an important moment in history, and this is why METC wants to help document it for future generations, sharing the story of how the people of New Jersey were resilient, kind, creative, and generous. We will ORPHAN TO APPRENTICE: CHILD INDENTURES AS SOCIAL WELFARE Orphan to Apprentice: Child Indentures as Social Welfare focused on the lives of orphans in early America. The American colonies, and later states, did not have the complex social welfare system that we have today. However, there were systems in place to help those in need, and orphans were among those assisted by those systems.
