CELL NOTATION
Cell Notation is a shorthand notational system used to describe statndard and non-standard melodic and harmonic structures and voicings more completely. The term “cell” is used here to mean a small tone grouping (generally a two to five tone structure) which can be used as a separate entity or used as a base to build more complexstructures.
THE WAY OF THE CIPHER The Way Of The Cipher is a wake-up call, a call to arms! It is a call to our brothers and sisters in the streets with a message of the times. Word in rhythm is a very old art. Freestylin (improvisation) and Ciphers are just as old. These concepts go back at least to RESISTANCE IS FUTILE Resistance Is Futile. Line Notes. Steve Coleman and Five Elements live at Le JAM, Montpellier France. These CDs were recorded live at a club called Le JAM in the city of Montpellier in the South of France. THE ASCENSION TO LIGHT The Ascension to Light. Most of these compositions are studies in sound. The written notes are meant to provide some insight into the intended symbolism in the music. SINE DIE | STEVE COLEMAN Sine Die. Liner Notes. Born in one of music’s traditional centers, Chicago, on September. 20th, 1956, Coleman grew up on the South Side, within walking distance of the gamut of musical traditions, from blues to jazz to pop, that the Windy City has fostered. GENESIS & THE OPENING OF THE WAY Genesis & The Opening of the Way. Liner Notes. Looking back on Steve Coleman’s recorded output over the past dozen years and listening to this new two-CD set, I’m reminded of poet Jay Wright’s remark, following one of his readings, to an audience member who commented that Wright seemed to be trying to weave together a lot of differentthings.
