FAQ | LUNCH IN A BOX A bento lunch is a compact, balanced, visually appealing meal packed in a box. Historically, it’s a Japanese box lunch, similar in concept to the Indian tiffin, the Korean dosirak, or the Filipino baon lunch. In Japanese, “ bento ” or “ obento ” refers to the packed meal, and “ bento-bako ” LUNCH IN A BOX: BUILDING A BETTER BENTO Mini-sandwiches and gold kiwi. FRIED SHRIMP BENTOS: SIMPLE VS. FANCY Today I’ve got two lunches that represent both ends of the bento spectrum: one is fast and simple, the other is time-consuming decorative food art.My usual preference is for the fast and easy bento made through speedy prep techniques and leftovers, but once or twice a year I go the extra mile for a holiday lunch. Think of it like a birthday cake: even if you make cake regularly, you probably REAL-LIFE VALENTINE BENTOS AT PRESCHOOL thanks for posting the variety of everyday lunches. What a great inspiration. Also just a note about the disney bento’s. We have 3 of them and the side snaps keep falling/breaking off. SPEED TIP: FREEZE CHOPPED GREEN ONIONS IN PLASTIC DRINK I’ve written previously about freezing chopped green onions or fresh herbs to speed up prep time and reduce spoilage, but a twist is using plastic drink bottles as handy dispensers. SPEED TIP: KEEP ACIDULATED WATER FOR SLICED FRUIT One of my basic tips for preventing cut fruit from browning is to dip the fruit in acidulated water right before packing. This will slow the browning process, not halt it. This is great, but mixing up sweetened lemon water to my taste takes a minute or two in the morning that I’ve been looking to cut. BENTO GEAR ON MENU FOR HOPE 6 The yellow bento set includes a watertight bento box, two matching bags, chopsticks, elastic bento belt and a Zespri “spife” (spoon/knife combo) for packing whole kiwifruit. The tools include a boiled egg shaper, sandwich cutter, onigiri rice ball shaper, vegetable cutter, pancake ring and silicone food cups, all shaped likeWinnie the Pooh.
