LITTLE PLAY CLUB
Each month we focus on a new playful topic, whether it be small world play or setting up engaging play spaces. This is where we'll explore the ins and outs of play and move you along your playful journey to becoming a purposeful playmate for your little learners! When you log into the Play Portal, you'll find an extensive library of masterclass videos waiting for you. TASTE-SAFE SENSORY PLAY FOR BABIES Whether you’ve been following me for a little while or a long while, you’ll know that I love all things sensory play! But when it comes to food-based sensory play, well that can be a bit controversial. You see, many early years childcare centres don’t allow food-based play (often for cultural reasons), but I am BEHAVIOUR MANAGEMENT USING SOCIAL STORIES In my little behaviour management pack, I included two social stories for using with young children. “Hurtful Habits” is about what you shouldn’t do to your friends – biting, pulling hair, telling secrets etc. Making friends is such a big aspect of Prep/Kindergarten and I would always refer to the students in our class as ‘ourfriends
8 ACTIVITIES TO DEVELOP FINE MOTOR SKILLS AT HOME Add a ball of play dough to a tray and insert some skewers into the play dough – be sure to remove the sharp ends of the skewer first! Next, cut up some straws and place them in a bowl. Invite your little learner to carefully thread the straws onto the skewers! This is a great way to develop hand-eye coordination and fine motor skills. PIZZA SHOP DRAMATIC PLAY Casey is an early years teacher turned stay at home mum to three little learners aged 6 and under. HANDS-ON ACTIVITIES FOR LEARNING HOW TO SUBITISE Children work in pairs and have one board to share, a dice and a set of 10 coloured counters each (one may have red and the other may have blue). The first child rolls the dice and places their counter on the matching number. You should encourage children to subitise to find the number shown on the dice rather than counting. ACTIVITIES FOR EXPLORING POSITIONAL LANGUAGE Day 4 – We moved on to exploring positional words in relation to our bodies by playing Simon Says and introducing the concept of left and right. We put our hands in the sky and looked for the hand that made the L shape with our thumb and pointer. The kids then traced their left and right hands into their math journals and labelled them. SIMPLE ACTIVITIES FOR EXPLORING PATTERNING Pattern Worms. My wonderful teacher aide came up with this fantastic idea during small group rotations. She used pipe cleaners and some gorgeous brightly coloured beads from our craft room. Once the students had threaded their patterns, she dabbed some glue into the head of the worms to secure the beads and looped the pipe cleaner atthe end of

ACTIVITIES FOR EXPLORING POSITIONAL LANGUAGE Day 4 – We moved on to exploring positional words in relation to our bodies by playing Simon Says and introducing the concept of left and right. We put our hands in the sky and looked for the hand that made the L shape with our thumb and pointer. The kids then traced their left and right hands into their math journals and labelled them. UNDER THE SEA SENSORY PLAY TUB All you need is some blue jelly, food dye, coconut and some ocean figures. First I made some blue jelly which I left to set for four hours in the fridge. Once it was ready, I mixed it up with a spoon and placed it on one half of my tray. Next I grabbed some desiccated coconut and yellow food dye. I mixed them together and added thecoconut sand

HOW TO GET STARTED WITH SMALL WORLD PLAY There are really only three main components to a sensory small world – the base, the figurines and the loose parts. Then all you need is something to set it up on or in! You could use a small world table or any old container really! Lately we’ve been loving the Kmart Metal Tray for our small worlds!. Let’s get stuck into the details so that you can create your very own small world tray 8 ACTIVITIES TO DEVELOP FINE MOTOR SKILLS AT HOME Add a ball of play dough to a tray and insert some skewers into the play dough – be sure to remove the sharp ends of the skewer first! Next, cut up some straws and place them in a bowl. Invite your little learner to carefully thread the straws onto the skewers! This is a great way to develop hand-eye coordination and fine motor skills. PLAY SCHEMAS: THE SECRET TO A SUCCESSFUL INVITATION TO Using Play Schemas to inform your Invitations to Play. Once you’re able to identify a play schema appearing in your child’s day, you can then begin to develop invitations to play that allow them to explore that schema further.
