THE STUDIO'S. les ballets C de la B. info. studio s3. studio s18. In November 2008 a new dance studio was opened on the Bijloke site in Ghent, right next to the offices of les ballets C de la B: studio S3. This substantial amount of extra space gave les ballets C de la B a chance to pursue their artistic ambitions even more extensively. The choreographer Sidi Larbi Cherkaoui is a young fellow with the suppleness of a contortionist and the fanaticism of a flagellant. Rien de Rien is his first production for Les Ballets C. de la B. after his much-lauded dancing in Alain Platel’s Iets op Bach. It is there tooALAIN PLATEL
RELATED PROJECTS. Alain Platel is trained as a remedial educationalist, and is an autodidact director. In 1984 he set up a small group with a number of friends and relatives to work collectively. Emma (1988) signalled his concentration on directing. He was responsible for Bonjour Madame (1993), La Tristeza Complice (1995) and Iets op Bach (1998NICHT SCHLAFEN
nicht schlafen. A group of men gathers around some dead horses to perform a ritual. Summarized in one sentence like this, "nicht schlafen" might retain the semblance of a story. But everything instantly contradicts this notion. The area of the archaic cult is bounded by a giant blanket. And amongst the men there is one woman. ASOBI | KAORI ITO | LES BALLETS C DE LA B Asobi literally means 'adult game' in Japanese and it refers to the superfluous and pleasurable activities of adult life. Games of risk, fight, competition, theatre, dance, sex, all activities in search of euphoria, surrender, exaltation. In Japan, these games are the exclusive privilege of men.EURUDIKE DE BEUL
After her biomedical studies, Eurudike De Beul obtained the first price opera and a higher diploma with felicitations of the jury in Mons and Liège. As a light soprano she sang several years oratorio and baroque repertoire. Due to more important stage work and body research her voice grew into a colour which fits Mahler repertoire andheavier

In November 2008 a new dance studio was opened on the Bijloke site in Ghent, right next to the offices of les ballets C de la B: studio S3. This substantial amount of extra space gave les ballets C de la B a chance to pursue their artistic ambitions even more extensively. The choreographer Sidi Larbi Cherkaoui is a young fellow with the suppleness of a contortionist and the fanaticism of a flagellant. Rien de Rien is his first production for Les Ballets C. de la B. after his much-lauded dancing in Alain Platel’s Iets op Bach. It is there tooALAIN PLATEL
RELATED PROJECTS. Alain Platel is trained as a remedial educationalist, and is an autodidact director. In 1984 he set up a small group with a number of friends and relatives to work collectively. Emma (1988) signalled his concentration on directing. He was responsible for Bonjour Madame (1993), La Tristeza Complice (1995) and Iets op Bach (1998NICHT SCHLAFEN

After her biomedical studies, Eurudike De Beul obtained the first price opera and a higher diploma with felicitations of the jury in Mons and Liège. A distancia is a dialogue between virtuality/reality, past/present, Cordoba/Brussel. A distancia experiments with the conventional rules of time and space.The actual focus of the project is on the process of creation between two choreographers, separated by an ocean. Two choreographers, Lisi Estaras (Brussels, Belgium) and Carina Bustamante (Cordoba, Argentina), had the idea to create a SIDI LARBI CHERKAOUI In March 2003, Sidi Larbi Cherkaoui presented his next choreography for les ballets C de la B, Foi, a project that pursued the symbiosis between live music (14 th century medieval music and traditional peasant songs) and contemporary dance and theatre. Jan Vandenhouwe. Jan Vandenhouwe is artistic director opera at Opera Ballet Vlaanderen, as from season 2019-’20 on. When he graduated at musicology in Leuven and Berlin, he started working as opera critic for the newspaper De Standaard. From 2005 till 2008 he was dramaturge at the Opéra National de Paris, where he collaborated closely with ROSALBA TORRES GUERRERO Rosalba Torres Guerrero. ‘My origins are French-Spanish although I was born in Switzerland in 1974. The technical construction of a performance usually remains hidden from the public. In S3, you can now see what happens between unloading and reloading: the construction of set, light and sound, with the technicians as the only agents in a slightly artificial staging by Kwint Manshoven and Tessa Daluwein. During the exhibition, the set will be built on Wednesday and Thursday, followed by a ghost performance on Friday. We will play the recorded soundtrack of the performance, with all the shuffling, screaming and panting, but we will take away the embodiment, as a sign of the times. On Saturday we deconstruct and load. A PIONEER IN YOUTH THEATER It is with a heavy heart that we receive the sad news that Eva Bal has passed away. She definitely was a Grande Dame who ensured that theater for and by young people from the late 1970s onwards was seen as fully fledged performing arts. To her, children on stage were young people who, from their life experience and their perspective, have something to tell us about how we can live this life. She created two performances together with Alain Platel: _Landschap van Laura_ (1991) and _De Tuin_ (1992). Unlike any other production of les ballets C de la B, _Out of Context-for Pina _is reprised once a year. After years of fruitful cooperation with Frans Brood Productions, it was time to think about distribution in a different way. We made a conscious choice to downsize and relocate, strengthened in this decision by the incalculable consequences of the pandemic on international tours. Helena is fascinated by the power of stories and likes to operate at the intersection between art and politics. She studied French-German Language and Literature and was coordinator at Multatuliteater Ghent and at the movement for critical citizenship Labo vzw. With Mestizo Arts Platform, Victoria Deluxe and Multatuliteater Ghent, in Nicaragua and in Congo (RDC), she dedicated herself to committed theatre adventures. From the Museum of Fine Arts in Ghent she coordinated an interdisciplinary European project on co-creation. In this project, she worked closely with Selma and Sofiane Ouissiand

By making _Mein Gent_, directors Frank Van Laecke and Alain Platel realize a long-cherished dream they share with each other: to pay tribute to Ghent, the city with which they are thoroughly intertwined. Both Ghent townsmen found each other ten years ago in making music theatre performances. Supported by soundscapes composed by Steven Prengels, they dive with each performance into a most extraordinary universe to tell about the little and the great tragedies in life. Remind _Gardenia _in 2010 or also _En avant, marche! _in 2015. On stage is a small cast of performers with a great reputation : Pascale Platel, Ineke Nijssen and Gorges Ocloo. But previously, Van Laecke and Platel both have worked with large groups of amateurs and professionals. They want to share this experience for _Mein Gent_, in which a large group of Ghentians will play alongside the regular cast._Mein Gent

This year’s online edition will be devoted to the Mediterranean space. It presents a focus on Arkadi Zaides’ most recent works _Talos_ and _Necropolis_, that both question the migratory movements happening in Europe and atits borders.

RELAUNCHING THE CALL TO SUPPORT THE CULTURAL BOYCOTT OF ISRAEL WITH AN OPEN LETTER OF ALAIN PLATEL Since 2004 les ballets C de la B lends its active support to a cultural boycott of Israel. Because of the increasing tension, les ballets C de la B relaunches the call to support the cultural boycott of Israel. Alain Platel emphasizes the relaunch with an open letter: Open letter by Alain Platel (les ballets C de la B). Ghent, 12 October 2015. I would once again like to make a clear call for the support for the (cultural) boycott of Israel. I _really_ am not much of a hero and it is always with a heavy heart that I swing into action, when I feel that it is necessary. It is even harder when I am forced to disagree with fellow artists – whose work I admire immensely – in this respect when they claim that these kinds of actions or statements either are not ours to take or make, or don’t help matterswhatsoever.
My (artistic) collaboration with Jewish _and_ Palestinian artists, both in the Occupied Territories and here in Belgium, however, leaves me no choice. Since my first visit to the Occupied Territories – in 2001, and this during the intifada – I became convinced that the resolution of the conflict in this part of the world could be crucial and could give a huge boost to a positive development in the whole region, and by extension, East-West relationships as a whole. Of course, this is very naïve and utopian, but I believe that harbouring such utopian hopes is a good thing. After all, I see very little or no evidence of how the existing political _and_ military structures _do/did_ get things moving. And this is _why_, more than ever, I want to make a plea for a delicate, yet special citizens’ initiative: the support for the (cultural) boycott of Israel. Recent hot news from this region only reaches us when unspeakable cruelties are inflicted on Jewish citizens. We are not told, however, what actually triggered them. It always seems as if yet another Palestinian extremist brutally attacked innocent Jewish civilians in a moment of insanity. What we don’t hear, for instance, is how Jewish settlers and other extremists meanwhile are allowed to engage in constant (often violent) provocations; what’s more, under the continuous protection of Israeli soldiers, in the Palestinian districts, at the Al-Aqsa mosque and by extension, permanently and _everywhere_ in the Occupied Territories. Photographer Filip Claus has recently made a short film about such an event in the city of Hebron. This is a Palestinian city on the West Bank (so-called Palestinian territory!) with approximately 200,000 inhabitants, where 800 illegal settlers live who are permanently guarded and supported by some 2,000 (!) Israeli soldiers. The Jewish settlers take regular ‘sightseeing walks’ in the Palestinian part of the city, accompanied by a small army of Israeli soldiers, at that … A daily (!) shocking, provocative presence. This is one instance of continuous harassment, besides the much more radical actions. Gaza is still an open-air prison; land, properties and possessions of Palestinians are still being systematically and illegally confiscated or simply destroyed. Illegal settlements are still being built _every _day in Palestinian territories. Every day, Palestinians are still being harassed, discriminated against, picked up, locked up or – where ‘necessary’ – simply shot. The OCHA (Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs), a United Nations humanitarian organisation, for instance, regularly publishes the shocking figures of the ‘invisible victims’ who are killed there every year. (see: http://www.ochaopt.org/documents/ocha_opt_the_humanitarian_monitor_2014_10_02_english.pdf). You could ask yourself here how it is possible that, at first glance, Palestinians seem to respond to this in such a resigned way. The massive military protection, the continuous legal and administrative preferential treatment of Jewish settlers, and selective reportingencourage this.
As many have been predicting for a long time, this inevitably leads to radicalisation on both sides, which we have clearly seen increase for some considerable time now. And as many have been predicting for a long time, we once again find ourselves on the brink of an intifada. The third intifada, as it is being called. And if this one, just as predictably, is crushed in a horribly violent way, the situation may calm down again for a while … as we wait the fourth intifada and the fifth, the sixth … etc. to kick off. Les ballets C de la B wants to invest in the next generation by taking in residents who will get the opportunity to be coached in their work by director Alain Platel and Hildegard Devuyst, Platel’s dramaturg for more than 20 years. The basic idea are one-month-residencies in one of the studios at les ballets. There are no prefixed artistic conditions, no exclusives when it comes to form or movement language.
