Therefore, where you place your dehydrator is an important factor. Using it in a very damp basement, for example, will prevent proper drying. For the most successful results, be sure to use vegetables at the peak of theirripeness.
FIVE WAYS TO MAKE YOUR OWN SOUR CREAM Direct-set starter may be purchased here. To make direct-set sour cream, add one package of starter to 1 quart of heavy cream. Stir thoroughly. Cover and allow this to culture in a warm spot (70°F to 77°F is ideal) for 18 – 24 hours, or until the sour cream has thickened. Refrigerate. MEXICO MIDGET TOMATO: A GREAT BIG, LITTLE TOMATO Mexico Midget Tomato: A Great Big, Little Tomato. One of my absolutely favorite varieties of tomato is called Mexico Midget. (Mike says that he would have to take sensitivity classes at work if he talked about this tomato). This variety is a small, grape tomato, about 1/2″ in diameter. The plant, however, is huge! MAKE YOUR OWN GARLIC POWDER AND OTHER WAYS TO PRESERVE GARLIC Making Garlic Powder. The first step in making garlic powder is to peel your garlic. This can be done with a sharp knife, but this garlic peeler really helps to peel it quickly. Next, slice the peeled garlic cloves thinly. Again, a sharp knife will work, but you’ll do a better job of getting nice, even, thin slices with a mandoline slicer. To do so, pack a jar with wintergreen leaves and cover with chlorine-free water. Place a lid on your jar, cover with a tea towel, and leave on your counter or other warm area for 3 days, or until you see bubbles forming. Strain, and warm the tea gently just to drinking temperature. HOMEMADE RHUBARB SAUCE WITH 3 OPTIONS FOR SWEETENING 3/4 – 1 cup organic cane sugar. 1 tablespoon water. Combine rhubarb, sugar and water in a saucepan. Cook over low heat, stirring frequently, for 15 – 20 minutes until the rhubarb is soft. Puree in a blender. Yields about 3 cups rhubarb sauce. Refrigerate or freeze. To can: Ladle hot rhubarb sauce into hot jars, leaving 1/4 inchheadspace.
