City Manager Rick Klein hopes to hear word on the feasibility of doing so soon, he said at the May 18 city council meeting. But unique challenges are posed by the pandemic that the city will need a game plan for. However, it will happen via five separate ceremonies. There will be two graduation ceremonies on April 30, at 1 p.m. and 4 p.m., for all health related fields. HIGH SCHOOL BASEBALL AND GIRLS TENNIS LEAGUE STANDINGS High school baseball and girls tennis standings. The leagues include the Tri-Peaks League, the Santa Fe League and the Class 1A District 4. He enjoyed playing pool with his father, working on cars, playing sports and spending time with his kids, his nieces ROCKY FORD MAN FOUND GUILTY IN 2018 SHOOTING DEATH OF An Otero County jury found Rocky Ford resident Justin Schneider guilty of negligent homicide of his wife, Wendy Schneider, on Friday after a weeklong trial overseen by Judge Michael Schiferl. The trial had been pending for nearly a year due to social distancing and public health restrictions taken in light of COVID-19. HISTORIC CHURCH BUILDING PURCHASED BY CITY OF LA JUNTA Mayor Jeffri Pruyn Monday night presented the purchase of a historical church building on the southeast corner of Third and Santa Fe to the City Council for approval. Several years ago when the Industrial Park gave three properties in trade for a property in the Industrial Park area, the city sold the properties for $400,000, which was put in reserve to buy buildings for historical rehabilitation. An adult male was found dead in a field west of Fowler, the Otero County Sheriff's Office said in a Facebook announcement to its official news page. REDUCED PRISON POPULATION COULD BE FINANCIAL CLIFF FOR As Colorado aims to reduce its prison population, Arkansas Valley officials fear a financial cliff. A controversial prison utilization study that has local government officials and businesses fretting over the future of Bent, Crowley and Otero county communities was released in January. The study stems from a 2020 bill that originally sought to ROCKY FORD DEATH BEING INVESTIGATED AS POSSIBLE HOMICIDE The Otero County Sheriff's Office is investigating a possible homicide after the death of a young man from Rocky Ford. After responding to reports of shots fired outside Rocky Ford city limits in the 29000 block of Otero County Road 20 on May 17, Otero County sheriff's deputies reported finding 22-year-old Joseph Barela with a gunshot wound to his head upon arrival to the scene, according to a ROCKY FORD OFFICER FACES DRUG CHARGES UPDATE: Chief Angelo Griego told the newspaper later on Thursday that he cannot comment on details of the charges filed against Officer James Lopez, citing the ongoing investigation by Rocky Ford Police Department, the Colorado Bureau of Investigation and the 16th Judicial Court District. However, Griego did say that there are two investigations into Lopez's alleged misconduct unfolding: a LIFE AT BENT'S FORT GRIPS KOCH Daniel "Jake" Koch, acting chief interpreter for Bent’s Old Fort, has been on duty since the fall.
