Gorgeous and openhearted linework is colored with green, yellow, red, purple and navy Japanese pigments, producing a dignified brilliance characteristic of Kutani Yaki. The bluish porcelain unique to Kutani helps to bring out the gentle colors of the pictures. ODAWARA SHIKKI (LACQUERWARE) The special features of Odawara Lacquerware include its high-quality lathe work and the degree to which the lacquer brings out the full beauty of the woodgrain. Odawara lacquerware involves two techniques: kijiro-nuri, in which clear lacquer is used, and suri-urushi-nuri, in which raw lacquer is rubbed firmly into the polished surface of thewood.
YUKI TSUMUGI (PONGEE) YUKI Tsumugi (Pongee) The Yuki area of Ibaraki Prefecture had been a center for sericulture, or silk farming, since ancient times. Based on this, Yuki pongee was woven during slack periods of the farming year and cloth was supplied to the Imperial Court during the Nara period (710-794). During the Edo TAKAOKA DOKI (BRONZE CASTING) Takaoka bronze casting dates back to the beginning of the Edo era (1600-1868) when the Maeda clan in Kaga invited seven highly skilled metal casters to come and work at their newly opened workshop. The craft developed through the production of chased bronze Buddhist fittings, and in the Meiji era (1868-1912), work from the area wasexhibited at
IZUSHI YAKI (PORCELAIN) IZUSHI Yaki (Porcelain) Large quantities of kaolin were discovered in the Izuhi area during the 18th century. With the help of the local feudal lord, potters skilled in the porcelain making from Arita (present-day Saga Prefecture) were brought in to help, and the porcelain made in the castle town of Izushi marked the beginnings ofthese wares.
