READ ACROSS AMERICA MOVES TO DIVERSE You may remember last March, Blavity published an article showing Dr. Seuss’ early political cartoons advocating the internment of Japanese Americans and depicting Black people as savages and monkeys. Well, it turns out that the author of that piece, Katie Ishizuka, followed up with a critical race analysis of 50 of Seuss’s picturebooks.

I have a new portfolio website at gracehwanglynch.com Check it out, but in the meantime, you can catch up below Hi, I’m Grace Hwang Lynch! I’ve been blogging at HapaMama since 2008, after I took a break from the paid workforce to care for my family. TAIWANESE FIVE-SPICE FRIED CHICKEN Usually, after traveling for any period of time, I return with a craving for home cooking, usually Chinese. This time, however, my official duties kept me in the conference center most of the time, dining on hotel catered meals. HOW TO FOLD BAH TSANG VIDEO One of the most iconic Taiwanese foods is the bah tsang (or zong zi, in Mandarin). These bamboo leaf wrapped glutinous rice dumplings are a traditional food for celebrating the Dragon Boat festival (Duan Wu Jie, which falls on June 28 this year), as folklore has it that a Chinese poet drowned himself in a river over his unrequited love. RED BEAN SOUP WITH RICE DUMPLINGS My family has an old photo of two women cooking. In the grainy picture from Taiwan, only the women’s hands are showing. What you mainly see is a table full of food: two whole chickens, some eggs, two mounds of dough, and a huge tray of pink and white dumplings. SHISEIDO BENEFIQUE REVIEW Our partners at Shiseido sent me some products to review, but all the opinions below are my own. This is the time of year that my skin does a Jekyll and Hyde thing. HOW TO TALK TO YOUR KIDS ABOUT CULTURAL APPROPRIATION After Avril Lavigne's "Hello Kitty" video, I need to give my kids another primer in cultural appropriation TALKING WITH GRACE LIN WHEN THE SEA TURNED TO SILVER We’re so excited, because one of our favorite children’s book authors, Grace Lin, just released a new title — When the Sea Turned to Silver, the latest addition to her Middle Grade series which blends Chinese folktales with likable new protagonists. The earlier books are Where the Mountain Meets the Moon and Starry River of the Sky (Amazonaffiliate links).
DO THEY CELEBRATE EASTER IN ASIA? All the more reason I am glad to be having Easter in Asia this year. But I have a confession: I complain and act like I am above this materialistic frenzy, but — especially as my kids get older — there is something I can’t resist about chocolate wrapped in shinywrappers.
