Indigo is a leguminous shrub that is cultivated throughout the world, from the tropics to temperate climates. It is one of the world’s oldest dyestuffs. It is mentioned in Indian manuscripts from the 4th century BC, and by Marco Polo in his writings as he traveled through Central Asia and beyond. A love of vibrant colors and bold designs is a constant throughout my tapestry work. These elements are clearly visible in the two tapestry hangings shown that accompany this article. I use commercially dyed wool on a linen warp set at eight ends per inch. I wove these standing up at my four-harness Cranbrook floor loom. I first learned to weave at Arrowmont School in Tennessee where I studied THE LAST FEZ IN CAIRO While attitudes in Egypt towards the tarbouche have changed dramatically in the past couple hundred years, time stands still in the Al-Tarbishi factory, the last remaining fez maker in Cairo and indeed all of Egypt. FEMININE, DARING MEISEN KIMONOS When young middle class Japanese women began to move out into the world beginning in the 1920s and continuing through the 1940s they looked for a fashion garment, something suitable for social events, lunch with women friends, flower arranging classes, etc. Everyday indigo cottons and stripes, expensive traditional formal kimono or conservative office wear were not suitable. Eleven years ago, Patricia Moldonado and four other women, who had been working as colleagues in a non-profit foundation for handcrafters in Bolivia, decided to partner to form Nanay. The company was already working with one client in the United States, hosting three workshops that had 15 knitters.HUIPILES OF OAXACA

A garment can then be embellished with lavish hand-embroidered flowers, the punch-needle technique, the chain stitching or with the straight sewing machine. From North Africa to South Africa, east to west, yellow is a color of great importance to the people of this vast and diverse land. In The Primary Colors, Andrew Theroux writes that yellow has a variety of meanings including wisdom, illumination, intuition, power and glory. He notes in Egypt that yellow represents the color of happiness and prosperity, but also the color of the Egyptian Pyramids. INDIA AND THE HISTORY OF COTTON Cotton it truly a miracle fiber: it has been spun, woven, and dyed since ancient times, and it is still the most widely used fiber for cloth today. It is soft and fluffy and grows in a boll around the seeds of the cotton plant. There is almost nothing that cotton can’t be turned into: clothes, bedding, tabletop, furniture, even art. When I was a child in Japan, I asked my dad where the blue came from. The color was obviously already making an impression. Much later, in my own dye explorations I realized that he had no idea, but had a ready answer.
