WHY I CHOSE A CHEVY VAN FOR VAN LIFE Learn more. When I decided to make the move to #vanlife, I was living out of an art studio and a Subaru Outback. I feel like this detail is important, because I think that choosing the right van for you depends on what life is like for you right now, and your perspective on how much space you might need. This fact is also important because I INSULATING YOUR VAN: EVERYTHING YOU NEED TO KNOW FOR YOUR Once the foam dries, cut off any excess with a utility knife. If you choose to insulate the floor: use cardboard templates to cut ½” XPS or Reflectix to fit. Spray the underside with 3M High Strength 90, set in place, and weight it down until dry. Door panels: Use the same method to install foam board insulation. DIY VAN CONVERSION: INSTALLING PLYWOOD WALLS IN OUR VAN After fully insulating our van and installing laminate flooring, the next step was to put up the walls.. As with every part of the van build process, there are many different options to choose from for walling material. For our van, we decided to go with 1/4” birch plywood because it’s flexible, easy to work with, and has a nicegrain pattern.
VANLIFER’S GUIDE TO SLEEPING, CAMPING, AND OVERNIGHT PARKING A couple major benefits of vanlife are cheap travel and saving money on housing costs. And the biggest way to achieve both is camping for free most of the time. There’s free camping and overnight parking for any situation: longer term stays in the wild, quick stopovers off the highway, and parking in towns and cities. DIY VAN CONVERSION: AWESOME CEDAR PLANK CEILING INSTALLATION First, we put up ceiling studs by screwing 1×2” boards into the sheet metal using 1-1/2″ self-tapping sheet metal screws. We then cut cedar boards to length and screwed them into the studs, moving from the driver’s side to the passenger side and setting the tongue-and-groove along the way. MOUNTING AN ARB AWNING ON A HIGH TOP VAN (WITHOUT A ROOF RACK) Step 7: Mount the Awning! The ARB awning comes with six square head mounting bolts that slide into channels on the back of the awning. These channels line up exactly with the holes on the ladder rack brackets. To mount the awning, we decided to attach two bolts to eachof the brackets.

VAN LIFE HOW TO: YOUR COMPLETE GUIDE TO LIFE ON THE ROAD Vanlife is the process of taking control of your life. It’s about leaning into your fear of the unknown in order to pursue what makes you feel alive. It’s about meeting strangers from all over the world and accepting them for their differences, while openly seeing the commonalities we all share with each other. WHY I CHOSE A CHEVY VAN FOR VAN LIFE When I decided to make the move to #vanlife, I was living out of an art studio and a Subaru Outback.I feel like this detail is important, because I think that choosing the right van for you depends on what life is like for you right now, and your perspective on how much spaceyou might need.
MAIL AND PACKAGES ON THE ROAD: A GUIDE FOR VANLIFE NOMADS Sometimes Amazon is the only place to get a certain item, and the free two-day shipping with Prime makes it easy to get packages quickly and reliably on the road.. Conveniently for us, Amazon has built out a network of Amazon Lockers where you can send your packages for pickup. If we know we’ll be in an area that has an Amazon Locker, we can place an order and our packages will arrive in HOW WE MADE CUSTOM KITCHEN CABINETS FOR OUR DIY VAN BUILD Then we cut it into two pieces – one for a fixed counter area, the second for a flip up access lid above the water tank. To make the access lid, we rip cut a 2” strip off the edge-glued lid piece that we permanently fixed to the top of the frame. We then attached the lid to this piece using a 12” piano hinge. HOW TO BUILD AN EASY PORTABLE SOLAR PANEL MOUNT OUT OF PVC So, we decided to return it and figure something else out. We found a Youtube video showing a portable solar mount made out of PVC pipe and we just knew it was a great idea.. The video shows a mount for a small 30-watt panel, but we took the concept and completely redesigned it to work with our 100-watt panel. BOUGERV PORTABLE FRIDGE REVIEW: IS THIS CHEAP VANLIFE The BougeRV fridge is a solid entry into the portable refrigerator market, and seems at home in the wild. BougeRV refrigerators are the latest in a slew of cheap, mass-produced 12V fridges that have entered the market in the past few years. HOW TO FIT A QUEEN-SIZED BED IN YOUR VAN: BADASS PULLOUT Step 3: Build the Side Rails. The side rails add a lot of stability to our bed design and help the frame slide in and out with ease. We cut two 1×2’s and four pieces of ½ plywood to the length of the rear platform. For the plywood width, we cut two pieces to 5” and twopieces to 3-½”.
VANLIFE AND MENTAL HEALTH: HOW VANLIFE INCREASED MY ANXIETY Moving into a van set me free in so many ways. I peeled back the layers of who I was and found someone more resilient, more authentic, more open. However, anxiety I didn’t know I had bubbled to the surface in an unhealthy way. This is the story of mental health, and vanlife, and the complicated relationship I have with both. 11 SPACE-SAVING STORAGE IDEAS FOR A DIY VAN CONVERSION 7. Storage Boxes Attached to Doors. In our quest to maximize storage and eliminate dead space, we noticed that when the side doors were closed there was a ton of empty space above the steps into the van. So we decided to fill it by building storage boxes and attaching them tothe doors.

It’s about leaning into your fear of the unknown in order to pursue what makes you feel alive. It’s about meeting strangers from all over the world and accepting them for their differences, while openly seeing the commonalities we all share with each other. VANLIFE AND MENTAL HEALTH: HOW VANLIFE INCREASED MY ANXIETY Moving into a van set me free in so many ways. We used three rolls for the floor and the front door panels. Total cost: $48. Installation was fairly simple. You’ll want to put down the laminate flooring one row at a time. We started with the passenger side because we could run one row along the side door and wheel well all the way to the back.
