A garden of stories. “We need stories (and theories) that are just big enough to gather up the complexities and keep the edges open and greedy for surprising new and old connections.”. Objects help us live among the stories we value. They are stories we can hold, adorn our world, offer as gifts and care for over time. THE EEL AS A TOTEM AND SYMBOL OF RESILIENCE Every year the players return, unite and play out their plan of attack. The resilience of the Parramatta Eels is, in itself, worthy of the story below, as is the continuation of the eel itself through its struggles to arrive at its own end-life goal. It is great to win, but the best part of the story is always the incredible journey. HUMANS AS A CUSTODIAL SPECIES Tyson Yunkaporta explains how humans became a custodial species and their role to increase the connections within the world. You don’t need to believe in ghosts to balance spirit and live the right way in this world. You can use any metaphor you like—for example ego, id, superego and persona. Kurlkayima Ngatha - Remember Me is a West Australian exhibition exploring links between botany, land and cultural identity. A collaboration between FORM and IBN Corporation, the Yinhawangka, Nyiyiparli and Banyjima people. This exhibition has revealed an extraordinary depth of knowledge about nature and the land that is sustained by the Aboriginal peoples in the Pilbara. BIOPHILIA: THE CRAFT AND LOVE OF LIFE Biophilia literally means “love of life”. To Erich Fromm, the psychologist and philosopher who coined the term in his book The Heart of Man: His Genius for Good and Evil (1964), biophilia is an orientation or attitude towards existence. The biophilic orientation prefers making or constructing over retaining; growth or the new overthe old
MY VILLAGE MAKES
Fakiha village, Lebanon. The “Fakiha” village is located about 127 km to the north east of Beirut, in Mohafaza Baalbeck-Hermel. It is surrounded by agricultural villages where we find a huge number of cattle. The handmade carpets, dated 300 years ago, are what makes “Fakiha” one of the most famous villages in Lebanon. UHADI & UMRUHBE A RESONANT XHOSA TRADITION Both uhadi and umruhbe generate two fundamental notes: one on the open untouched string and the other when the player presses the string to shorten the length. But the method of playing and type of sound from each instrument differ. The umruhbe string is bowed with a dried grass stem while the player holds the top of the wooden bow in their mouth. OGENE & OJA TALKING INSTRUMENTS OF A PLAYFUL IGBO CREW The other vital instrument of ogene music and Igbo culture is the oja, a high-pitched handheld carved wooden whistle used for speech surrogacy and rapid-fire melodic interjection. In addition to ogene, oja and the group’s primary vocal performativity, the other instruments of a typical ogene ensemble are the udu (pot drum), ichaka(basket
CONTEMPORARY LEI AND BODY ADORNMENT FROM THE TORRES STRAIT In each workshop, participants produced unique body adornment inspired by the idea of the lei. Participants incorporated both customary materials such as shells, feathers, seeds, pandanus, sedge grasses, and bamboo as well as contemporary and recycled materials including copper, silver, nylon, rubber, canvas and silk thread. SENRYU: THREE LITTLE WORDS MAKE MANY OBJECTS SAYUMI YOKOUCHI, MARI ISHIKAWA AND MIKIKO MINEWAKI ARE INSPIRED BY THE SHORT JAPANESE POETRY OF SENRYU TO MAKE BEAUTIFUL JEWELLERY. FROM POVERTY TO PROSPERITY: LANDMARK LANDSCAPE EXHIBITION AT THE HUAXIA PAPERCUTTING MUSEUM IN CHANGSHA, HUNAN PROVINCE, EXPLORES THE RISE OF A PROLETARIAT AND THEIR VISUAL LANGUAGE. OVER THE PAST DECADE AND A HALF, I HAVE OBSERVED A TRANSITION IN THE PAPERCUTS THAT LINE THE STREETS DURING THE SPRING FESTIVAL OR CHINESE NEW YEAR. HAND-CUTTING WAS SUPPLANTED BY LASER-CUTTING. PAPER HAS BEEN REPLACED WITH PLASTIC. IN ADDITION TO THE METHODS OF MECHANICAL REPRODUCTION, I WITNESSED THE POSITION OF PAPERCUTTING EVOLVE FROM FOLK TO HIGH ART.
