ASK GARDENERD: WHAT'S EATING MY SEEDS? PLANT PROTECTION TIPS A great question came into Ask Gardenerd this week about plant protection: “It seems that every time I start seeds or plant out transplants in my raised bed, they get eaten overnight. It’s so frustrating. Help!” Home made cloches work wonders for protectingseedlings.

This is somewhat normal, but make sure to address the above-mentioned issues first. Old and new Navel oranges grow inharmony.
ASK GARDENERD: BIG CAULIFLOWER Potassium is responsible for fruit and flower development and overall vigor. If your soil is lacking potassium (or it is locked up in the soil, which is more likely) your cauliflower won’t set a head. Some gardeners recommend applying fish emulsion every couple of weeks. We use kelp emulsion here and compost tea.SOURDOUGH BREAD
That’s it. You mix equal parts and leave it on the counter. Natural yeasts in the air and on the grain collect and begin to ferment. Natural fermentation creates bubbles. Bubbles leaven bread dough. PROPAGATING DRAGON FRUIT FROM CUTTINGS Hi, I am new to growing DF and I would like some advice. My cuttings are doing fine so far 🙂 it´s about future of my DF. 1) I saw other people´s DF are already blooming or they have fruits, in my climate I can move DF outside from begging/mid may till mid/end of september. ASK GARDENERD: PREVENTING COMPACTED SOIL IN POTS Inoculate, inoculate, inoculate! The second is to inoculate plants and pots with aerated compost tea on a regular basis. Chlorinated and chloramineated water kills microbes, so adding biology back to your soil is a good idea. We recommend services like Compost Teana in Southern California. Some farmers markets have compost tea vendors aswell.
ASK GARDENERD: YELLOW LEAVES ON CITRUS TREES Sometimes It Just Happens. When fruit begins to set on citrus trees, the tree shifts focus from leaves to fruit production. So some leaves will yellow and drop, especially if nutrient levels are below adequate. This is somewhat normal, but make sure to address the above-mentioned issues first. Old and new Navel oranges grow inharmony.
ASK GARDENERD: ROOTSTOCK FRUIT ON CITRUS Every once in awhile we get a question or comment from a fruit gardener that their citrus fruit tastes terrible. This week, Paul Marini wrote in to Ask Gardenerd with a different question that is related: “I know the Meyer lemon tree is a combination of lemon and mandarin orange.I am pretty sure there are orange branches growing out of the bottom half . We use kelp emulsion here and compost tea. HOW TO DO A HOME SOIL TEST FOR CITRUS Do the pH Test – this is done before mixing water into the sample. It’s pretty simple: spoon a bit of soil into the test chamber, fill with water, add a capsule, put the lid on and shake. Wait a minute for it to develop in color and mark down the results. Citrus ASK GARDENERD: ONIONS DIDN'T BULB UP Typically, long-day onion varieties are grown in northern climates, where they have daylight into the evening–14-16 hours. Walla-walla, and sadly – your Yellow Spanish, are among them. Long-day onions generally don’t bulb up in southern climates since day length over winter is about 10 hours. You can still eat them before the flower(the

Summer is nearly here! YOUTUBE: BASIC DRIP IRRIGATION FOR CONTAINER GARDENS Basic Drip Irrigation for Container Gardens. Correction: In the video Christy states that you can lose 50-90% of water to evaporation. The stats are actually between 30-50% to evaporation. The 50-90% statistic includes runoff. Overhead watering can be very wasteful if not monitored for runoff and absorption rates. ASK GARDENERD: TREE ROOTS IN MY GARDEN A great question came in this week to Ask Gardenerd: “It’s Yvette from Mar Vista!!! I have a BURNING QUESTION!!! We have a big big rainbow eucalyptus tree in our front yard that is causing big, big problems with our raised bedsthe roots (mostly small tangly ones) keep invading and stealing all the water and nutrients from them and we had a horrible harvestwe want to put in a root FIVE STEPS TO A BEAUTIFUL FLAGSTONE GROUND COVER Step Five: Finishing Up. After all the flagstone has been laid, I poured more decomposed granite as well as some compost and swept it into the cracks. Adding compost to the mixture ensured that some greenery would grow in the cracks. Finally, water the area well so that the granite will compact and fill in any final gaps between theflagstone.
YOUTUBE: GROWING CILANTRO AND PARSLEY Our latest YouTube video covers growing cilantro and parsley and how to keep them from bolting to seed too quickly. Citrus ASK GARDENERD: WHY WON'T MY PLANTS GROW? Once warm weather hits, they either bolt to seed or get covered with aphids. So try again in October and you’ll probably have better luck. Before you transplant seedlings into the ground (or containers) make sure you tease the roots apart a little bit. That helps them get established in their new home and grow stronger.SOURDOUGH BREAD
That’s it. You mix equal parts and leave it on the counter. Natural yeasts in the air and on the grain collect and begin to ferment. Natural fermentation creates bubbles. Bubbles leaven bread dough.
