It’s critical in the fight against climate change. It can be a daunting challenge at times - a real David versus Goliath fight. But not this week. Or last week for that matter. Because IT’S BEEN AN EXCITING, HOPEFUL FEW WEEKS IN THE BATTLE AGAINST BIG GAS AND OIL. Last week, the International Energy Agency (IEA) finally confirmed that new oil and gas fields should not be approved beyond this year. That’s obvious to us. New oil and gas development should have stopped years ago. But the IEA has promoted fossil fuels for a very long time. So this shift is a big deal! Read the full entry » HISTORIC CLIMATE VICTORY! Emma-Jayne Geraghty, Education and Training Coordinator with Friends of the Earth Ireland said: _"This ruling signals the end for Big Oil and Gas. Fossil fuel companies like Shell have a unique responsibility for the climate crisis. Their continued drilling for gas and oil is totally incompatible with maintaining a planet that is safe for life. Not only that, but Shell’s promotion of false climate solutions is a dangerous distraction from the real climate action we need. Because behind its talk about supporting the Paris Agreement, we know that Shell has been doing the very opposite - fuelling climate chaos."_ Read the full entry » FRIENDS OF THE EARTH IMPACT REPORT Issued in the blog on May 20, 2021 at 12:35:00. The climate movement has been calling for greater public consultation on climate action for years. It's a crucial part of achieving climate action that's faster and fairer. So we're pleased that the Government has organised a public consultation on the Climate Action Plan. But we're also disappointed with how the consultation has been written. Many of the questions DON’T ADDRESS THE SCALE OF CHANGE NEEDED to achieve the climate action we need. Nor do they address the need for a SYSTEMS CHANGE APPROACH TO CLIMATE ACTION - that has CLIMATE JUSTICE AND A JUST TRANSITION AT ITS HEART. Read the full entry » JOIN OUR SOLAR SCHOOLS YOUTH ASSEMBLIES! Issued in the blog on May 11, 2021 at 16:34:00. To address the climate crisis, we need to get off fossil fuels fast. Ireland has excellent renewable energy resources, but our energy system uses fossil fuels for the majority of our energy needs in transport, heating and electricity. This has to change. Fast! At Friends of the Earth we are working to make sure that Ireland’s energy system is fit for the future, with no more investment in fossil fuel infrastructure, no more exploration for fossil fuels and an ENERGY SYSTEM THAT VALUES AND SUPPORTS CITIZENS AND COMMUNITIES PARTICIPATING IN AND BENEFITING FROM OUR RENEWABLE ENERGY TRANSITION.
