SCIENCE FICTION
For decades, Science Fiction has been the primary source for many Fantastic Plastic model kits. But it was not always so. Although science-fiction subjects were all the rage in the 1950s, virtually all of the kits produced during that era were drawn from designs created by legitimate aerospace experts, not Hollywood art directors. THE ORVILLE BY FANTASTIC PLASTIC MODELS The Orville is the hero ship of the eponymous FOX-TV sci-fi series created and starring Seth MacFarlane. Classified as a "Mid-Level Exploratory Vessel" operating under the auspices of the Planetary Union, the ship carries a compliment of approximately 300 officers and crew of various species. LINDBERG FLYING SAUCER The Lindberg "Flying Saucer" holds a place in history as being the world's first injection-molded science-fiction model. Re-released repeatedly during the 1950s and 1960s, it again hit the shelves in the 1970s in a "glow-in-the-dark" version, in the 1990s as one of the Golden Age science fiction kits resurrected by Glencoe Models, and finally in 2011 by Atlantis Models, which specialized in CONVAIR XAB-1 "BETA-ONE" ATOMIC-POWERED BOMBER BY ABOUT THE DESIGN: ABOUT THE KIT: In the 1950s, America's defense industry explored several radical ways to gain air superiority over the rival Soviet Union. Convair's XAB-1 concept bomber employed two notions that were particularly fashionable during this Cold Warperiod.

FLASH GORDON ROCKETSHIP 1:72 MODEL KIT BY FANTASTIC PLASTIC ABOUT THE DESIGN: ABOUT THE MODEL: "Flash Gordon" starring Olympic swimming medal winner Buster Crabbe was the first cinematic treatment of Alex Raymond's intrepid space hero who debuted in comic form in1934.
"THE BLACK HOLE" CYGNUS BY MPC Released shortly after the December 1979 premiere of "The Black Hole," (the Walt Disney Studio's first PG-rated film!), MPC's "Cygnus" is a huge, impressive, highly detailed model that requires great patience on the part of its builder/painter. Although released only once, it was produced in such quantities that it is still fairly common in thecollector's market.

ROCKETSHIP GALILEO BY FANTASTIC PLASTIC The "Galileo" was the fourth release for Fantastic Plastic Models, and the first to feature optional extended landing gear. Other unusual features included the option of a conventional chemical rocket engine in place of the atomic motor (This facilitated building the model as pre-"Galileo" space shuttle) and a simple decal sheet that featured the craft's name in four different 1940s period fonts. It was briefly re-released briefly by Tsukuda under its short-lived "S.F. Old Time" label in the mid-1980s. This model was built from an originalissue.
SPACE SHUTTLE AND LAUNCH TOWER BY REVELL ABOUT THE DESIGN: ABOUT THE KIT: Developed in the 1970's and first launched on November 12, 1981, the Space Shuttle was America's first stab at a "reusable" manned spacecraft system. Actually, the system was only partially reusable. WILLY LEY PASSENGER ROCKET BY MONOGRAM The Monogram "Passenger Rocket's" initial release was brief and this kit would remain a coveted and expensive collector's item until it was re-issued in 1996 as part of Revell/Monogram's "Selected Subjects Series." The reissued kit faithfully duplicated virtually every aspect of the 1959 original, including the multi-colored plastic pieces, the decals and Willy Ley box art.
