5 WAYS TO LOVINGLY SUPPORT SOMEONE WITH C-PTSD I was watching the Disney movie The Hunchback of Notre Dame when I suddenly went into shock. Right from the start, seeing Quasimodo be the recipient of so much gaslighting – being told that the world wasn’t safe, that he would never be accepted or loved, that Frollo had only his best interest at heart – struck a jarring, but familiar chord with me. I could barely breathe as I watched 5 REASONS WHY FEMINISM NEEDS TO ADDRESS CHILD ABUSE (WHILE When it comes to addressing domestic abuse and working to eradicate it, feminism has played a critical role. But there’s one area of abuse that doesn’t get enough recognition in the movement: child abuse – especially child abuse committed by women. In order to address it, we need to see the abuse of children for what it is, regardless of the abuser's gender. 5 WAYS MARGINALIZED PEOPLE CAN RECOGNIZE THEIR PRIVILEGES Privilege and oppression simultaneously impact our lives in a number of intersectional ways. If you're struggling with recognizing your privilege as a marginalized person, this might serve as a helpful guide. YOU CALL IT PROFESSIONALISM; I CALL IT OPPRESSION IN A How comfortable do you feel in a three-piece suit? “Professionalism” is a social construct, and like all social constructs, it's a total downer. Standards of looking professional uphold a lot of ugly “isms,” as policies with a racist, sexist, classist, and xenophobic core. STOP THINKING THEY’RE ‘OUT OF YOUR LEAGUE’ 1. It Assumes There’s One Hierarchy of People. The basic presumption of “out of your league” is that people can be ranked from least to most desirable, whether it’s based on attractiveness, wealth, social status, or a combination of these and other factors. Of course, people differ from each other in thousands of ways. 3 WAYS THAT GENDER REVEAL PARTIES CAN BE HARMFUL Gender reveal parties promote a socially constructed gender binary that eclipses the full range of sex and gender possibilities. They also set expectations that can lead to parents questioning what they did wrong to raise a child that didn’t grow up to be what they, and everyone else at the party, expected of them.. One way we can begin working to avoid situations like these is by figuring WHY IS THE PERSON I LOVE SO MEAN TO ME: WHEN LOVE HURTS 3. The Water Torturer. The Water Torturer stays evenly calm in arguments and has a quiet derision (insulting or mocking) and meanness. They can psychologically assault their partner so they don’t even understand why they are so upset. “As long as I’m calm, you can’t call anything I do abusive, no matter how cruel.”.4.
WHAT GENDER MEANS TO ME AS A MARRIED MAN WHO LIKES TO WEAR But the true nature of gender is hidden by a mythology that gives it a false objectivity: Gender isn’t just social, but is firmly grounded in biology. You know, women are hardwired to be caregivers; men, to sow their oats. So the social norms that govern gender are presented as not just appropriate, but inevitable. 6 WAYS TO SUPPORT YOUR NON-BINARY CHILD Non-binary kids are kids who feel that they are multiple genders, none, or some mixture thereof. As a former non-binary kid myself, this author has some thoughts about how best to parent non-binary kids. Because knowledge is power – and knowing how to wade through your child's non-binary identity can help you be a better parent and your child be their authentic self! 4 TIRED TROPES THAT PERFECTLY EXPLAIN WHAT MISOGYNOIR IS Dear Beloved Reader, we're going to be real with you..
