General. Many people think only of allergies when they hear the word pollen, but pollen plays a vital role in the health of our environment. Pollen, the plant’s male sex cells, must be transferred from the anther to the stigma of the same or another flower for the plant to produce fruit and seed. While some plants are self- orwind-pollinated
DECOMPOSITION AND SOIL CO2 EMISSION (DESCRIPTION) This movement or flux of CO 2 is known as CO2 emission (Figure 1). Decomposition is not the only source of CO 2 in soil. In a forest or grassland ecosystem, plant roots are abundant in the soil and root cells perform cellular respiration, metabolizing carbohydrates that are sent down from the leaves. This CO 2 is released to the soil andcan be

FRONTIERS IN ECOLOGY AND THE ENVIRONMENT Predators like the gray wolf (_Canis lupus_) provide humans with ecosystem services and disservices. These can be both direct, such as wolf-related tourism and livestock losses, as well as indirect, including the regulation of elk (_Cervus canadensis_) populations and reduced opportunities for elk hunting. In the June issue of _Frontiers_, Gilbert _et al_. discuss how conservation outcomes can be improved when resource managers and other decision makers account for such indirect “predation” services in models that aim to assign economic value to carnivores.Read more

ECOLOGY
In their study published in the May issue of _Ecology_, Davies et al. investigated how African wild dogs, which are competitively inferior to lions and frequently killed by them, coexist with lions in a landscape where both carnivores are present at exceptionally high densities. They found wild dogs are able to exploit the heterogeneous landscape of the study region to avoid detection by lions, providing evidence for spatial heterogeneity being a mechanism for carnivorecoexistence.

ECOSPHERE
Two ecosystem engineering beachgrass species dominate the coastal sand dunes of the United States Pacific Northwest. European beachgrass (_Ammophila arenaria_) and American beachgrass (_Ammophila breviligulata_) were intentionally introduced to stabilize a naturally shifting sand environment and have had differential effects on coastal protection and biodiversity conservation. A novel hybrid between these two species is described by Mostow et al. in the April issue of _Ecosphere_ on the basis of morphological, cytological, and genetic analyses. The _Ammophila_ hybrid has been found at 12 coastal sites in Washington and Oregon, including the dune pictured here in Pacific City, Oregon. Understanding the ecological and population genetic consequences of this novel hybridization event is of the utmost importance in a system in which any change in dominant beachgrass species can have large effects on both biodiversity management andcoastal protection.

ECOLOGICAL APPLICATIONS Gregarious nymphs of the desert locust (_Schistocerca gregaria_) diurnally march on the hot ground of extreme thermal environments. In the June issue of _Ecological Applications_, Maeno et al. show that locusts could successfully maintain high but tolerable temperatures for efficient digestion through behavioral thermoregulation. A general biophysical model of thermoregulatory behavior allows forecasting activities of this most destructive locust species. The cover image shows stilting locusts which remain on the ground and lift their bodies to be distant from the hot ground surface of the Sahara Desert as a cool-down behavior.Read more

ECOLOGICAL MONOGRAPHS With ongoing global change, landscape structure changes are expected to be a driver of extinction rates of temperate zone ectotherms. In a study by Rozen-Rechels et al. in the May issue of _Ecological Monographs_, the authors conclude that changes in water availability, coupled with rising temperatures, might have a drastic impact on the population dynamics of some ectotherm species.Read more
